It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news of Victoria Mary Clarke‘s sister, Vanessa, passing away last Friday. It’s been a tough time for Victoria, especially coming less than two years after losing her beloved husband, Shane MacGowan. My thoughts are with her and her family.
I was so heartbroken to hear about the passing of Vanessa. As a longtime admirer of both her and the journalist who shared the news, I know how incredibly close they were – she described Vanessa as her very best friend, and it’s clear how much she meant to her.
Victoria shared a heartfelt message about her sister, along with a lovely photo of Vanessa with the late singer Shane MacGowan.
Victoria shared the heartbreaking news of her sister Vanessa’s passing last night. Vanessa was her lifelong best friend, and Victoria remembers her as a truly kind, compassionate, and selfless person – one of the most caring individuals she knew.
She was incredibly intelligent, kind, and genuinely cared for those around her. She had a curious mind and was interested in all sorts of things.
We were so lucky to have known her, even though her time with us was far too short. I’m heartbroken by her loss, and her absence will be deeply felt by everyone who knew her.

She and Shane MacGowan had a sisterly bond, and he clearly loved her very much. I sincerely hope he was there to greet her after she passed, and that he’s watching over her now. Sending all our love and support as she begins her next journey. ❤️
‘Bless you my darling sister I love you forever.’
The Pogues frontman Shane died in November 2023 with pneumonia after years of declining health.
Imelda May, the Irish singer, was among the first to express her sadness, sharing that the deceased was full of life, loving, and a joy to be with. She noted that many people would miss her dearly, and sent her love.
One fan expressed their condolences to Victoria, saying they were very sorry to hear the news. They described Vanessa as a wonderful person and sent their love to Victoria and her family.
Someone else expressed their condolences, saying, “I’m so sorry for your loss, Victoria. Sending my deepest sympathy for the passing of your sister.”
Victoria was sixteen years old when she first met her future husband in December 1982 at the Royal Oak pub in North London.
The couple, with an eight-year age gap, started dating in 1986 and got married in 2018. They recently celebrated their fifth wedding anniversary, just a few days before Shane passed away.

Victoria once described meeting her partner as a life-changing moment, saying it felt like a missing part of her was finally found.
Victoria described their relationship as being built on complete and unwavering love, making it impossible for them to stay angry with each other.
We definitely both made mistakes that would cause most couples to split up. Things like cheating – for a lot of people, that would be the end of the relationship.
‘But we just absolutely loved each other, completely and utterly.’
