Miley Cyrus penned her new song Secrets as an olive branch to her dad Billy Ray Cyrus.
The pop star, 32, posted a short clip from her new music video on social media Thursday night. This followed the release of the deluxe edition of her album, Something Beautiful, at midnight Pacific Time.
She explained in the post that the song was meant as a way to make amends with someone she cared for, even after a period of distance. She believes that truly forgiving someone also sets you free.
The artist also thanked Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac for their contributions, saying they ‘brought magic to the song’.
The note concluded with a simple, poignant revelation, ‘This song is for my dad.’
In the song, Miley sings about a healthy kind of love, saying it shouldn’t feel restrictive. She emphasizes that she won’t control or confine anyone, even while being close to them.
In the chorus, she powerfully sings about wanting to be the person someone chooses, repeating, ‘Oh, I wanna be the one.’ She emphasizes her devotion by saying she’ll follow them ‘Anywhere you run, anywhere you go.’
After Miley’s parents divorced, she, her father, and some of her siblings stopped speaking to each other and became estranged.
Billy Ray, 64, was married to Tish Cyrus, 58, from 1993-2022.
Miley explained the story behind her song “Secrets” in a recent episode of Monica Lewinsky’s “Reclaiming” podcast.
She explained that she wrote the song for her father, hoping he would share things with her, even if those things were difficult or things she wasn’t sure she wanted to hear.
She explained that she wanted to be the person he trusted enough to confide in, even about things that could hurt the family.
‘I wanted him to think that as a middle child, I’m old enough that I could take some of that.’
Along with Miley, Billy Ray Cyrus also has four other children – Noah, 25, Braison, 31, Trace, 36, and Brandi, 38 – with his ex-wife, Tish.
He also shares son Christopher, 33, with Kristin Luckey.

Earlier this year, the family resolved a difficult relationship. Fans noticed they had made amends when the singer posted a photo with her father and brother Braison on Instagram in May.
Soon after, the singer known for “Achy Breaky Heart” publicly praised his ex-wife on Mother’s Day, in a surprising move.
To mark the occasion, the country singer – who has five children with Tish – shared a heartfelt message emphasizing the importance of family.
He praised his ex-wife, saying Tish Cyrus is a remarkably strong mother. He also readily acknowledged that being married to him was challenging.
In 2023, Tish wed actor Dominic Purcell. Meanwhile, Billy revealed he was dating actress Elizabeth Hurley around Easter time.
Miley recently shared on Instagram that while she and her father have faced difficulties in the past, family is now the most important thing to her. She’s feeling good about how they’ve been able to reconnect and heal over time, especially now that she’s in her thirties.
She ended the note by expressing gratitude for her family’s good health and the love they share.
