For more than 20 years, Channel Nine’s The Block has been a hugely popular reality TV show in Australia, known for its home renovation challenges.
This popular reality show keeps viewers hooked with a mix of helpful home improvement advice, exciting conflicts between contestants, and surprising auction results.
Although audiences are captivated by what happens on TV, some of the biggest surprises have actually occurred during the making of those shows.
Many participants have faced legal troubles, experienced devastating personal losses, and had to give up prizes they’d worked hard to earn.
Discover the surprising and even more shocking backstories of some of The Block’s most talked-about contestants – stories that go far beyond what you saw on television.
Dani Bacha – Contestant’s criminal past forces early ex it

Dani Bacha was booked to compete on series two of The Block in 2004 alongside his wife Monique.
After just one episode, the couple had to abruptly leave the show when surprising information about Bacha’s criminal history was published in the media.
I was shocked to learn that Bacha had a past run-in with the law. Apparently, back in 2002, he was convicted of helping to make methamphetamine and served six months in prison because of it. It’s definitely something that changes how you see things.
The scandal caused a lot of controversy surrounding the show, sparking discussions about how well contestants were being checked. As a result, producers significantly improved their vetting process.
The couple seemed devastated when they were eliminated, and later, Bacha explained that things quickly spiraled out of control after the article was published, causing significant distress for the entire family.
They left quietly after being unexpectedly eliminated, choosing to avoid any further drama that might affect their loved ones or the other participants.
Bacha was sentenced to a one-year good behavior bond, and some people believe this should have disqualified him from appearing on television if it had been known publicly.
Channel Nine attempted to minimize the scandal by swiftly substituting the original couple with alternate contestants, Andrew Rochford and Jamie Nicholson.

Jess Eva and Norm Hogan – Reality winnings blown
Jess Eva and Norm Hogan, a friendly couple from Queensland, became fan favorites on the 2018 season of The Block by beautifully renovating apartments in St Kilda’s historic Gatwick Hotel.
Their auction profit?
$209,000 – a modest sum, compared to the season champions.
But it was how the lovable and easy-going couple spent their haul that made headlines.
Jess admitted in 2021 that their winnings disappeared almost immediately.
Honestly, one of the very first things my husband and I did was buy two above-ground pools! We were so excited, we practically gave them away to all our friends – it was like handing out candy, we just wanted everyone to have fun with us!
The couple lost a significant amount of money betting on a Maria Sharapova tennis match when Ash Barty unexpectedly won.
They expected a straightforward victory, but their bet quickly fell apart in the second set, leaving them disappointed and with less money.

They also paid off a friend’s car loan and covered someone’s rent.
Although they were disappointed their winnings didn’t last, both agreed it was worth it because they had a lot of fun.
Darren Jolly – From the depths of despair to a fresh start
Darren Jolly, a former Australian Rules Football player who faced personal struggles, has had one of the most compelling and emotional transformations seen on the show The Block.
Darren and his former wife, Deanna, were on a renovation show in 2014 and 2015. They won the competition in 2015.
But their happiness soon turned into heartache following the end of their 15-year marriage.
After a difficult and painful divorce, Darren became severely depressed. In October 2020, he shared a troubling message on Instagram, saying he felt he couldn’t continue living.
Those close to him – including friends, family, and even the police – stepped in to help keep him safe and support his recovery.
Darren has spoken about how much he struggled emotionally after losing his passion and motivation, and confessed he came close to making a very bad decision during that difficult time.

These days he credits his new girlfriend, Lucy Porter, with helping him reclaim his life.
The couple started dating publicly in late 2020, and their relationship quickly became something promising.
The arrival of their daughter, Olive, in 2022, confirmed their optimism, and he considered her a wonderful blessing.
As a longtime fan, I can tell you that when Olive came into his life, it was like a total game-changer for him. For years, he’d been battling a lot – feeling incredibly alone, dealing with real heartbreak, and honestly, struggling with his mental health. Olive was the complete opposite of all that, a turning point that brought so much positive change.
Suzi Taylor – From reality TV fame to legal troubles
Suzi Taylor first became well-known on the reality show *The Block* in 2015, but since then, her life has been marked by a number of strange and concerning events.
She recently appeared in a Brisbane court regarding a strange kidnapping scheme – often called a ‘honey trap’ – that shocked people working in television.
I was so relieved when the case against her and Ali Ebrahimi was finally dismissed. They were accused of some really serious things – extortion, false imprisonment, fraud, even assault – but ultimately, they were cleared of everything. I never believed they did anything wrong, and it’s great to have that confirmed. It’s a huge weight off my shoulders as a long-time supporter.

That was 2020 – now it’s 2025 and she continues to face legal troubles.
In March, she admitted to trespassing, theft, and common assault, but instead of going to jail, she only had to pay a fine.
Last October, she broke into a house and demanded belongings from the person who used to live there.
At the time, Suzi had just been released from prison where she’d served 50 days for evading police.
She’s currently out on bail while facing charges related to drug trafficking, and she was recently convicted of possessing methamphetamine, adding to her criminal record.
Oh my gosh, you won’t BELIEVE the rollercoaster this poor soul has been on! They used to be so famous, on TV and everything, but honestly, it’s been one court case after another for years. It’s just… heartbreaking to watch, but I still follow everything, you know? I just want them to be okay, even with all the trouble they’ve gotten into.
In April 2021, Suzi went to court facing charges including extortion, unlawful imprisonment, assault, and fraud. These charges came from an incident related to a supposed date where she worked as an escort that reportedly didn’t go as planned.
Police accused Suzi and Ali Ebrahimi of kidnapping and attacking a man she met on a dating app. However, both were acquitted of all charges.

A month later, Suzi was found guilty of several offenses – including having small amounts of cocaine and marijuana, driving under the influence, trespassing, and repeatedly violating her bail conditions – but she didn’t receive any additional punishment.
In May 2019, she admitted to fraud and theft after being caught using a stolen credit card to purchase alcohol.
A mother of three was caught on camera purchasing alcohol on May 2nd with a credit card she allegedly stole from a patient at Mater Hospital.
She spent more than $500 on seven separate transactions, including $400 on alcohol.
A week later, hotel staff at Brisbane’s Westin identified Suzi on security footage taking a guest’s phone and laptop from the bar.
On May 10th, police found the stolen items at her residence and she received a court date, where she was fined $2,500.
I first discovered Suzi back in 2015 when she and her amazing friend Voni were on The Block as part of the ‘Single Mums’ team. They were fantastic, and I’ve been a fan ever since! It was so cool to watch them renovate and really made me root for them.
Kylie Baker – from Blockhead to adult content creator

Kylie stood out as a fan favorite and wasn’t afraid to share her opinions during the 2024 season, and she competed with her husband, Brad.
She’s been hinting at joining OnlyFans for a while now, following reports that she was seriously thinking about creating an account on the adult subscription service.
The green-haired stunner often titillates her followers by sharing lingerie videos.
According to a source at Daily Mail, Kylie is considering a groundbreaking move: becoming an adult content creator, which would make her the first person to do so after appearing on the show.
Although the mother of four hasn’t publicly announced a career change, recent photos suggest she may be hinting at something new.
As a lifestyle expert, I’ve noticed a curious thing about reality TV contracts. While Channel Nine’s agreements traditionally prevent participants from directly profiting from traditional media like TV, radio, or print, it’s interesting to see that many other reality stars *haven’t* been blocked from exploring platforms like OnlyFans. It seems the rules aren’t consistent across the board, and people are finding creative ways to build income outside of the usual avenues.
