HBO has revisited the story of Adnan Syed, who was convicted in 2000, at age 18, for the 1999 murder of his former girlfriend, Hae Min Lee. The case gained national attention thanks to the 2014 Peabody Award-winning podcast Serial, which questioned whether Syed was wrongly convicted. HBO’s update details the latest developments in this long and complex legal saga.
Following the release of the HBO documentary about the Adnan Syed case six years ago, a new installment of the series documents Syed’s 2022 release from prison after 23 years. This freedom didn’t last long, though. Six months later, Maryland’s highest court sided with Hae Min Lee’s family, who felt they hadn’t been properly informed about his release, and reinstated his murder conviction. However, in March 2025, a judge determined Syed wasn’t a danger to the public and didn’t require him to return to prison.
This episode includes interviews with Syed both while he was in prison and after his release, as well as with the lawyers and family members involved in his case. Here’s a summary of the documentary’s final installment and an update on the current status of the case.
Re-examining a 26-year-old case
Syed received a life sentence because his friend, Jay Wilds, testified in 2000 that he assisted Syed in burying the victim, Hae Lee. However, director Amy Berg points out that there is ‘no physical evidence’ connecting Syed to the crime.
If Adnan didn’t commit the murder, then who did? No one else has been arrested or charged in connection with Hae Min Lee’s death. As of May 2025, the Baltimore police hadn’t investigated other potential suspects by comparing any new DNA evidence to theirs.
The fifth episode focuses on a 2020 event that led police to re-examine Adnan Syed’s case. A postal worker reported being chased by a naked man, who was identified as Alonzo Sellers. Sellers had previously told police he discovered Hae Min Lee’s body in Leakin Park in 1999. When officers searched Sellers’ home, they found he had kept newspaper clippings related to the time Hae Min Lee was found. According to Berg, this collection of clippings is highly unusual and raises suspicions.
Sellers was accused of assault and indecent exposure, but his DNA hasn’t been compared to the DNA found in Lee’s case. He also didn’t respond when a producer from HBO asked for a statement.
When Adnan Syed returned home

After 23 years, Syed returns to the house he grew up in, where he’s reunited with his parents and younger brother. He reflects on the passage of time, saying, “I haven’t touched a tree in almost 24 years,” as he reaches out to touch one in his family’s yard.
Syed was eager to be released so he could be with his mother, who was recently diagnosed with cancer and needed his support during treatment. Seeing him reunite with his father is especially touching now, knowing his father sadly passed away about a year ago after a prolonged illness.
Sitting on the bed he grew up with, Syed remembers the chaotic moment police arrived and told him to get ready to leave with them. He describes his newfound freedom as both happy and sad, explaining that he became close to people in prison who are now serving life sentences and may never see again. He misses seeing them every day. Fortunately, he’s also found support and connection with others who have been wrongly convicted and exonerated.
Where is Adnan Syed now?
In March 2025, Syed’s sentence was shortened to the time he had already served, thanks to the Maryland Juvenile Restoration Act. He is now 44 years old and is completing a five-year period of supervised probation.
He always dreamed of going to college, and while incarcerated, he was able to complete a couple of college semesters through Georgetown University’s program at the Patuxent Institution.
Today, he’s part of the Prisons and Justice Initiative at Georgetown, where he helps people who are in prison or returning to society find education and jobs. He also still works to free people who were wrongly convicted.
“He’s a very optimistic person,” Berg says. “We could all learn a lot from Adnan.”
