BBC’s breakout hit Belfast-set police drama confirms “best so far” new season release date

The release date for the third season of the hit BBC drama Blue Lights has been confirmed.

This police drama, which premiered in 2023, centers on three new officers – Grace (Siân Brooke), Annie (Katherine Devlin), and Tommy (Nathan Braniff) – as they begin their careers and adjust to the demanding world of the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).

Season two picks up a year after the first season’s events. With the McIntyre gang defeated, the police now had to manage the conflicts between other gangs vying for power in Belfast.

Blue Lights has proved a huge hit, with a third and fourth season commissioned by the BBC.

The new season of the show will be available all at once on BBC iPlayer starting September 29th. The first episode will also be shown on BBC One that same day at 9pm.

After two years on the job, Grace, Annie, and Tommy are now comfortable with the demands of being response officers and working under emergency lights.

Their investigation will lead them into a dark and dangerous underworld concealed beneath the surface of ordinary suburban life – a world populated by the professionals, like accountants and lawyers, who help criminals operate.

The traditional political and criminal structures are gone, replaced by a new network of international gangs operating in Belfast. This puts our officers in more danger than ever before, bringing the threat right to their doorstep.

For the 2025 season, Cathy Tyson will be joining the cast as Dana Morgan, who runs an exclusive private club, and Michael Smiley will play Paul ‘Colly’ Collins, a new intelligence officer.

Nathan Braniff told *Radio Times* he thinks the upcoming third season will be the strongest one yet. Siân Brooke agreed, praising the writing as significantly improved, saying she’s amazed by how much better the writers have become.

She added that the writing in this particular piece was exceptional, expressing amazement at the continued improvement of the writers. She simply couldn’t believe how good it was.

She admired the well-developed characters, noting that a lot of thought and effort went into making each one unique. This has allowed viewers to connect with them and become invested in finding out what happens next and how the story concludes.

The third season of Blue Lights will be available all at once on BBC iPlayer starting September 9th. The first episode will also air on BBC One that same day at 9pm. You can watch seasons one and two on iPlayer right now.
