Numerous Hollywood stars have come to the defense of Jimmy Kimmel after he was suspended from his show following his remarks about conservative personality Charlie Kirk.
ABC has put Jimmy Kimmel Live! on hold indefinitely, according to a spokesperson who made the announcement on Wednesday.
On Monday, the talk show host sparked controversy by discussing the recent assassination of Kirk at Utah Valley University. During his opening remarks, he suggested that supporters of the ‘MAGA’ movement were attempting to leverage the tragedy for political gain.
Tyler Robinson, 22, who is believed to be the shooter, has been arrested and charged with aggravated murder and other crimes. He appeared in court on Tuesday.
Kimmel suggested Robinson held conservative views, even though investigations revealed he leaned far-left and was dating his transgender roommate.
Nexstar, the network’s affiliate group, also stated on Wednesday that it ‘strongly disagrees’ with Kimmel’s remarks and ‘will substitute the show with different programs in the areas where it broadcasts ABC.’
Following the news, many celebrities have voiced their opinions about Jimmy Kimmel’s departure, including singer Halsey, who shared the story on her Instagram account.

She followed up by saying we’ve reached the stage where people are encouraged to report each other, censorship is rampant, and propaganda is so pervasive it’s hard to tell what’s true – a clear sign of fascism, in her view.
John Legend shared a post by David Frum highlighting a perceived double standard. Frum’s post questioned why calling out threats of government action against TV networks for the content of their comedy shows was being equated to accusations of fascism.
Ben Stiller shared news on X (formerly Twitter) that ABC was removing Jimmy Kimmel from their schedule, and simply wrote, ‘This isn’t right.’
MSNBC host and political commentator Chris Hayes expressed strong concern on Twitter, calling a recent action a direct and unprecedented attack on free speech.
California Governor Gavin Newsom also commented on X, stating that some are attempting to control the media by purchasing platforms, firing commentators, and canceling programs.
This isn’t happening by chance; it’s a deliberate effort, and it’s concerning. The Republican Party doesn’t support free speech and is actively working to silence people right now.
Alison Brie, known for her role in Community, shared the news on Instagram, calling it ‘unreal and very scary’.
Don Lemon described the news as deeply unsettling on Threads, and also pointed out the irony that those who criticize ‘cancel culture’ are often the ones doing the canceling.
