Bringing Up Bates star Erin Bates had severe complications with her right leg amid septic shock health crisis

Erin Bates, from the show Bringing Up Bates, says she’s lost the use of her right leg after a serious battle with septic shock.

The reality star, 34, shared on Instagram that she’s still recovering from health problems following the birth of her seventh child on August 25th. She developed a urinary tract infection (UTI) and a kidney infection shortly after giving birth, and is still dealing with the effects.

After spending nearly three weeks in the hospital, Erin was overjoyed to be going home to her children. She had been critically ill with septic shock and needed intensive care.

Originally from Tennessee, she shared that while they’re still figuring things out and she hasn’t regained use of her right leg, they’re focusing on the positive, especially being reunited.

The update arrived after fans grew worried about Bates’ health. This concern arose because her husband, Chad, had stopped posting regular updates about her illness on social media.

The family expressed deep gratitude, sharing that prayers had been a source of strength and support during a difficult time.

I was so touched by their latest post! They finished it with the most inspiring hashtags – things like #HealingJourney, #TogetherAgain, #BlessedBeyondMeasure, #GodIsFaithful, #MiracleMoments, and #StrengthInFaith. It really lifted my spirits and felt so positive and hopeful.

In another picture, Chad was pushing his wife in a wheelchair while she lovingly looked at their new baby.

Her husband said the reality star faced a life-threatening condition that started with a serious urinary tract infection and kidney infection shortly after giving birth to their seventh child, a son named Henry.

Chad recently gave fans a positive update, sharing a video of Erin cuddling their baby son in the hospital. He wrote that she is recovering well.

Chad hasn’t shared any new information about his wife’s health, and fans are worried that her condition may have worsened.

Even though Erin’s husband hadn’t shared any news about her condition, fans became worried when they saw posts from her siblings saying they were visiting, suggesting something might be wrong.

In a recent post, Erin was shown holding her newborn son, Henry, while recovering in the hospital. She was connected to an IV and medical monitors.

She also had on a beige cap that covered tape or bandages on her head.

The reality TV star kissed her baby son, Henry, on the nose, and he seemed to briefly smile. Erin, who had a serious seizure earlier this month, appeared to tremble slightly while holding him.

Chad shared a heartfelt message, saying they’re thankfully recovering and feeling blessed, and that they believe everyone’s prayers made a difference. ❤️‍🩹🙏

Fans of Bringing Up Bates noticed on Reddit that Erin’s brother, Lawson Bates, and his family shared on social media that they were visiting her.

Lawson shared on Facebook that he flew to Florida on a red-eye flight with his young son, Will. He also asked for prayers for his sister, Erin.

Shortly after, Lawson’s wife, Tiffany, shared photos on her Instagram Stories. One showed her with one of Erin and Chad’s daughters, and another featured Will in a stroller.

‘He’s so happy to be with his cousins. He’s like the happiest baby ever,’ she wrote.

People also noticed that Erin’s sister, Michaela, had come to visit after a picture of Erin holding her baby, Henry, was posted on Instagram.

Despite the positive tone of posts from Erin’s siblings, nothing suggested anything beyond a typical family visit following a new baby’s arrival.

Many fans commented on the posts, expressing concern that Erin’s health seemed to be worsening. The person who originally shared the updates even asked if something had changed with Erin’s condition that evening.

‘I wonder if that means she’s worse off now,’ read one of the replies.

One fan asked how Erin and her baby, Henry, are doing, saying many people are eager for an update.

Many people were pleased to see the Bates family uniting following Erin’s illness, and fans especially praised Lawson for being there for his sister and her family when they needed him most.

Chad previously shared an emotional update on Thursday, September 4.

Erin was recently admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) following a serious medical issue after giving birth to her seventh child on August 25th.

Chad, 38, shared on Instagram Thursday evening that his wife, Erin, experienced a long and serious seizure the night before, leaving him with a lot of complicated feelings.

Erin was finally recovering, but then things took a turn for the worse, bringing back sadness, worry, and tears.

Chad reported that Erin is still in the intensive care unit, where doctors are doing tests to figure out what’s causing her to feel unwell. He said she’s very weak and has been drifting in and out of consciousness for hours.

He shared that watching his wife struggle has been incredibly difficult, saying it’s one of the hardest experiences of his life, especially feeling unable to help her pain.

He shared that his love for her was beyond words and that he couldn’t picture his life without her, as she was his best friend.

Chad acknowledged the recent challenges have been demanding and exhausting, and he expressed solidarity with others going through similar difficulties.

Chad shared, ‘Like so many of you, I’m heartbroken to see her going through this. We’re all holding onto hope for her recovery, even though we don’t know what the future holds.’

‘Your prayers are felt and we are forever grateful.’

A comment from The Bates Family’s verified account added further detail about Erin’s recovery.

The message said, ‘She’s a joy to have around! All the nurses love her, and even though she’s hurting, she always manages to brighten everyone’s day.’

People shared many supportive and heartfelt messages and prayers for Chad and his family during their difficult time, responding to the post with the images.

The Modern Farmhouse Family account posted a message praying for Erin, asking Jesus to be with her and to heal her body from the inside out.

We are so grateful for the compassionate care and insightful guidance being given. We pray for continued wisdom as they work to find answers. We lift up the entire family in prayer, trusting in Jesus.

The family wrapped up in saying, ‘In your name, Amen!’

Chad recently shared on social media that his wife, Erin, is seriously ill after a difficult and emotionally draining labor resulting in the birth of their son, Henry.

We’re so grateful for all your prayers and support. Our baby, Henry, arrived a week ago, and it feels like a miracle! He’s doing well in the NICU and brings us so much joy.

We requested prayers for Erin’s recovery after a difficult labor. It lasted longer and was more challenging than her previous deliveries.

Despite everything she’s going through, she’s been a source of hope and a beautiful example of strength and gratitude to everyone caring for her – the nurses, doctors, and all the staff. Her kindness, even while she’s in pain, has touched us all.

He explained that Erin developed a serious urinary tract infection and kidney infection, leading to septic shock. She remains in the intensive care unit while doctors work to treat her, determine the cause, and find the best course of action.

Please keep this sweet girl in your prayers. She brings so much light to a difficult world, and we’re trusting in God’s promises. – Chad

Septic shock is a rare and life-threatening complication that happens in about 3 to 4 out of every 10,000 deliveries.

A 2024 report from the CDC showed that these complications are becoming more frequent, and urinary tract infections (UTIs) are a leading cause.

Infections and sepsis are the second leading cause of maternal deaths in the US.

Bates and Paine have six children: Charles, 10; Brooklyn, 8; Everly, 7; Holland, 5; Finley, 3; and William, who is 20 months old.

Shortly before their first child was born in 2015, the couple shared with People magazine that Bates had experienced multiple miscarriages caused by a blood-clotting problem.

People immediately responded to Paine’s request for prayers, with many writing messages like ‘Praying for her infection to go away in Jesus’ name!’

‘I pray for complete healing over her and for sweet baby Henry in the NICU,’ wrote one.

‘The whole Roman household going on our knees to intercede for prayer on your families behalf!

‘The Lord show his loving kindness and compassion and mercy over your family! Amen.’

Some people wondered if the couple should have more children, suggesting they think carefully about it.

Someone wrote, with genuine care, that it might be time to stop having children. They explained it’s a sign your body needs rest.

Someone suggested this might mean her body can’t handle any more pregnancies, calling it frightening and praying for her continued strength.

Bates first became well-known as one of the nineteen children starring in the reality TV shows Bringing Up Bates and its earlier version, United Bates of America.

She and Paine, who shared their first kiss at the altar, married in November 2013.

She was 23 years old when she got married, and soon after, they discovered they were expecting a baby. Unfortunately, they later found out the baby had stopped developing, and Erin needed a D&C procedure.

They named the child they lost Angel Paine. Erin then experienced two more heartbreaking miscarriages.

Experiencing a miscarriage is incredibly difficult. It’s devastating when something you’ve anticipated and prepared for doesn’t happen as planned – it truly feels like your world has fallen apart, she explained.

She explained that facing challenges builds strength and brings people closer together. It also inspired them to support others who were going through similar tough times, hoping to offer encouragement and help them cope.

In 2021, Erin shared that she’d had three surgeries to address ruptured cysts which led to internal bleeding.

As a result, she had to have one ovary removed and most the other one as well.

She shared on Instagram that while the experience has been frightening and disheartening, they are incredibly thankful for the doctors who have guided them through the difficulties. She added that her faith has provided them with an unexplainable sense of peace and strength.

She also expressed gratitude for her husband’s attentive care during her recovery, saying he spoiled her and took care of all her needs throughout the day.

She described her husband as incredibly patient and caring, and praised his cooking and household skills – he’s much better at laundry, dishes, and mopping than she is! She was especially touched by his daily love notes, which often brought her to tears and made her smile. She also loves watching their children burst into laughter as he playfully chases them around the house for hours.

A year later, the reality star had her gallbladder removed.

She and her husband run a business creating religious cards, stationery, and stickers. They also make skincare products using beef tallow and produce CDs of her singing hymns and other religious music.

Bates and her husband also have a successful YouTube channel with 147,000 subscribers, where they share glimpses into their daily lives and favorite recipes.

In July, Erin shared details about how she homeschools her children and gave an update on her pregnancy.

She revealed they had already chosen a name for their baby, explaining she couldn’t wait to find out the gender before deciding.

She excitedly announced their son’s name: “Henry Ble!” She also revealed that if they’d had a daughter, they would have named her Harper Anne, making sure to spell it with an ‘E’.

She said they’re eagerly anticipating the event, feeling like it’s both just around the corner and still a long way off.
