Dolph Lundgren, the actor known for his role in ‘Rocky’, recently announced he’s doing ‘very well’ after successfully battling cancer last year. He shared that doctors found ‘no evidence of disease’, which is often referred to as ‘NED’.
I was so saddened to learn that he’d been fighting lung cancer for eight years. He kept it private, and only shared in 2023 that he was first diagnosed way back in 2015. It just shows his incredible strength and resilience.
He successfully fought the illness for a time, but it returned in 2020. A doctor then told him he likely had only two or three years to live.
Lundgren decided to seek another medical opinion and begin treatment, and shared last November that he had once again overcome cancer.
The 67-year-old Swedish actor shared at the BAFTA TV Tea Party in Beverly Hills that he’s feeling well.
He described a difficult period lasting around five years, with the worst of it spanning three years. He’s now recovered and back to his regular workout routine, he told People magazine.
He mentioned his workouts aren’t as intense as they once were, but he maintains he can still do all the same things he could before his diagnosis.
I’m feeling more relaxed these days. I’m not staying out as late anymore, and while I’m not pushing myself as hard at the gym, I still go four or five times a week, he explained.

He has two daughters, Ida, 29, and Greta, 23, from his marriage to Anette Qviberg. He married Emma Krokdal in 2023 and they are currently married.
Going through cancer was surprisingly a good thing for me. I realize now that I was taking a lot of risks and heading down a dangerous path, and I might have seriously hurt myself if I hadn’t gotten sick. It really made me re-evaluate things.
In late 2023, Dolph Lundgren revealed he was battling cancer in an interview with Graham Bensinger. He wondered if his illness could be related to steroid use during his time as an action movie star and bodybuilder.
I used steroids in the 80s and 90s. While I can’t say for sure if it’s related, I’ve often wondered if my cancer diagnosis might be connected to that past use.
He considered his thoughts, admitting it’s common to second-guess decisions. He wondered if there might be a link between testosterone treatment and cancer.
During the show, he shared that his cancer came back in 2020, after a period where it had disappeared. He also revealed doctors didn’t give him a hopeful outlook.
The Punisher actor explained that in 2020, while back in Sweden, he experienced acid reflux. After getting an MRI to investigate, doctors discovered some additional tumors in the area.
They discovered another tumor in my liver, and that’s when it really started to sink in that things were serious. The surgeon told me the tumor had grown quite large – about the size of a small lemon.
He remembered asking his doctors about his prognosis. They estimated he had two or three years to live, but he sensed from the doctor’s tone that the outlook was actually worse, and he believed that was the end for him.
After consulting another doctor, Lundgren began treatment that successfully reduced the size of his tumors, and he later had surgery.
Speaking from his hospital bed after surgery, he explained that doctors removed a total of six tumors – one initially, then two more they discovered, and finally three smaller ones. He expressed hope that all the cancer had been removed, adding simply, ‘Hopefully it’s all gone.’
Last November, he shared wonderful news: he was finally cancer-free! He expressed his gratitude and excitement for the future, and thanked everyone for their continued support.
