Robert Redford had just returned to acting after a 6-year hiatus before his shock death at 89

Robert Redford recently resumed acting and passed away peacefully in his sleep at his Utah home on Tuesday at the age of 89.

It had been six years since this Hollywood veteran last appeared on screen, with his previous role in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame.

Redford had a small uncredited role during season three in the Western thrilled Dark Winds.

In March, he acted alongside George R. R. Martin in a dramatic scene where their characters, both imprisoned, played chess while serving their sentences.

The experienced actor, who is in his eighties and also a producer on the show, asked for the set to be closed during filming of his scene.

Throughout his impressive 60-year career, the actor became a legend, sharing the screen with iconic actresses like Demi Moore, Barbra Streisand, and Meryl Streep.

Redford was making a comeback after a six-year hiatus.

On the show, he eventually loses the game to Martin’s character in the stress-inducing chess scene.

Director Chris Eyre told Vulture after the show premiered that they had been discussing a guest appearance from the famous actor since the very beginning of the first season.

Rumors circulated about the actor appearing briefly in the season two finale, but the guest appearance didn’t actually happen until season three.

McClarnon, who is also a producer on the show, said he never imagined he’d meet Robert Redford, much less act alongside him.

John Wirth, the showrunner, admitted he didn’t know if the project would actually come together until it finally did.

Robert prematurely announced his retirement from acting in 2018.

Nearly seven years ago, he indicated he was likely nearing retirement from acting, having started his career at age 21. While he didn’t want to completely rule it out, he felt this role would likely be his last, according to Us Weekly.

He decided he’d had enough and wanted to finish with a cheerful, optimistic performance, possibly his last, in the film *The Old Man & The Gun*, as he explained.

However, just four weeks later, he changed his mind and told Variety that announcing his retirement had ‘been a mistake’.

He admitted he shouldn’t have made that statement. He explained that if he does decide to retire, he’d prefer to do so privately, without making a public announcement, as he believes talking about it creates unwanted focus.

‘I want to be focused on this film and the cast.’

Since making a noticeable mistake, Redford has focused on producing films from behind the scenes. In 2019, he was an executive producer for the well-received Sundance Film Festival movie, The Mustang.

He went on to do voiceover work in 2020’s Omniboat: A Fast Boat Fantasia.

He appeared in a brief role in the 2023 HBO series *White House Plumbers*, again playing journalist Bob Woodward – a role he famously had in the film *All the President’s Men*.

Robert Redford, a veteran actor who began his career in his early twenties, won an Academy Award for Best Director in 1980 for the film *Ordinary People*.
