A recent report shows that acting in Marvel movies isn’t as attractive to actors as it used to be. The study found that interest has decreased since the peak of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ‘Infinity Saga’ era, and reflects changing patterns in how Hollywood casts its films.
Lesser actors are demanding Marvel roles
Variety reports that interest from Hollywood actors in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe has cooled off compared to its most popular years. A leading agent noted that while a Marvel role is still a huge opportunity, they’re receiving fewer requests from clients now than they did around the time of the blockbuster hit *Avengers: Endgame*, which remains one of the highest-grossing films ever made.
According to Variety, Marvel’s 2025 films – Thunderbolts, Captain America: Brave New World, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps – didn’t do as well as previous movies and only made a small profit. One studio executive explained that these standalone films are struggling because audiences no longer feel they *need* to see them. Another director pointed out that while any movie *could* be a big hit, success isn’t guaranteed anymore.
The recent decline in performance follows a period of increased production from Marvel in the early 2020s, with both movie theater releases and shows on Disney+. According to Variety, Marvel’s Cinematic Universe became overly saturated with content across all platforms. While films like Deadpool & Wolverine and Spider-Man: No Way Home have been big successes, they stand out because they involved major team-ups or brought back popular characters.
The Infinity Saga of Marvel films was primarily driven by stars like Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Evans. However, the current Multiverse Saga has focused more on characters that aren’t as widely recognized. Movies like Eternals and Shang-Chi haven’t performed as well financially as those in the previous saga.
Marvel Studios believes the next two Avengers movies will be major successes. One studio insider told Variety they’re confident these films, “Doomsday” and “Secret Wars,” are guaranteed hits. They anticipate these large-scale crossover events will keep audiences interested in the franchise for years to come.
