Although ‘The Pitt’ isn’t about Los Angeles, the people who made it are happy it was filmed there.
HBO Max’s drama series, which realistically portrays a day in a Pittsburgh hospital’s emergency room, won the Emmy for best drama series on Sunday. The show’s creators and actors used their acceptance speech and backstage interviews to honor healthcare workers, and also to call for increased film and television production in Los Angeles.
Following their show’s success, creator R. Scott Gemmill and star/executive producer Noah Wyle emphasized the importance of filming in Los Angeles. They noted that local production has decreased in recent years due to factors like the pandemic, the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, and other locations offering better tax breaks.

Noah Wyle’s new show, ‘The Pitt’ on HBO Max, took home the Emmy for Best Drama Series on Sunday night.
Both “The Pitt” and “The Studio” won the award for best comedy, and while both are filmed in Los Angeles, “The Studio” is actually *set* there. It’s a humorous look at the entertainment business, focusing on a made-up Hollywood studio.
Gemmill, a producer on “ER,” is proud that “The Pitt” demonstrates a successful L.A.-based production. He noted the show receives around 3,000 applications for each role, highlighting the strong desire among Los Angeles actors to work. He hopes other producers will recognize the importance of filming locally and provide opportunities for them.
As a longtime film fan, I was really glad to hear about California’s increased tax credit for film and TV production. I actually heard from Dean Wyle, who’s won a couple of Emmys for his work on the show, that he was at the signing ceremony with Governor Newsom in July. He said they’re bumping up the credit program from $330 million to a much more substantial $750 million! Dean even gave a speech about his own experiences filming here in California, which I think is a great sign for the future of production in the state.

California Governor Gavin Newsom has officially approved an increase to the state’s annual funding for its film and television tax credit program, nine months after initially suggesting the change.
I was telling someone about Rob Nary, our special effects coordinator, and how his father and grandfather both did the same job. I wanted to emphasize that this city has a long history of incredibly skilled people working in the entertainment industry – over a century’s worth. Filming here means you get the advantage of that experience and talent, like having someone as good as Rob Nary on your team. You can build a studio anywhere, but you can’t recreate that level of inherited expertise.
Overall film and television production in Los Angeles continues to decrease, according to data from FilmLA, a local nonprofit. However, television production is a positive trend, increasing by 17% between April and June compared to last year, totaling 2,224 days of on-location filming. This is the highest number since the beginning of 2024, although it’s still 32.6% below the average for the same period over the past five years, according to a recent FilmLA report.
Filming on location between April and June was down 6.2% this year compared to last year.

Filming in the Los Angeles area decreased by 6.2% between April and June this year, compared to the same three months last year.
As a movie reviewer, I always pay attention to where a show is filmed, and it’s great to see so many Emmy winners choosing Los Angeles! Paul Audley, the head of FilmLA, recently shared with The Times that his organization is thankful these productions film here, and that they really contribute to keeping LA the entertainment industry’s hub.
Audley explained that these films showcase the incredible talent in the area while also providing jobs for hundreds of film industry professionals and boosting the local economy. He emphasized that filming within the region directly benefits communities, small businesses, and workers throughout the entire film industry.
