Hannah Einbinder says ‘Hacks’ could end with Season 5, speculates on how it might end

The Emmy Awards on Sunday night were a big win for “Hacks,” with Hannah Einbinder taking home her first Emmy and Jean Smart adding a seventh to her impressive collection. However, the show also sparked discussion about the series’ future and how it might end.

Before the show started, Einbinder told E! News that filming the final season felt both happy and sad.

Although it was a tough decision emotionally, Einbinder felt ending the show at that time was right. She explained, “It’s good to finish something when it feels complete-before it goes on too long. Just do it, enjoy it, and experience all the emotions.”

The Times’ writers reveal their most and least favorite experiences from working on and covering the show.

Einbinder and Smart jointly addressed reporters behind the scenes, expanding on Einbinder’s earlier remarks about the comedy show made on the red carpet.

Ultimately, the show’s creators – Paul Downs, Jen Statsky, and Lucia Aniello – will decide how things conclude. However, the initial idea was for a five-season run. As Gabby [Einbinder] explained, shows often end and then return, but neither she nor Hannah [Smart] know the final plan. They prefer to be surprised by how the story unfolds and don’t ask the writers about the ending.

Einbinder mentioned that filming for Season 5 will begin in about a week, and she and Smart then started brainstorming possible storylines. Smart jokingly suggested a plotline where she undergoes a sex change, to which Einbinder playfully responded with, “…and you fall even more in love with me? That’s likely!”

The actor, who went from competitive cheerleading to a fourth Emmy nomination for her role in the popular HBO comedy, is continuing to gain success. She describes herself as an adrenaline seeker, explaining, ‘I’ve always loved the sensation of feeling like I’m flying.’

HBO hasn’t yet commented on the show’s future or when it might end. While there’s no official word on whether Season 5 will be the last, the creators previously indicated they envisioned a five-season run, leading many viewers to believe the series is nearing its conclusion.

In an August interview with The Times, Einbinder became emotional when discussing what life might be like after the show “Hacks.” She explained, “I’ve become very close to the people I work with. We’ve built real relationships, so it’s definitely hard to think about it ending.”

She quickly returned to her usual funny self, making a lighthearted comment about what she’d like to see happen with her character, Ava. “I’d love for Ava to get rid of her acne and let her hair grow out,” she explained. “That would be a really important development for her.”
