- Meet the newest mage champion in Wild Rift
- Vel’Koz excels at poking and bursting down enemies with true damage from his passive ability.
Vel’Koz is a new mage champion added to League of Legends: Wild Rift. He deals a lot of damage from a distance, especially true damage which is effective against even the toughest opponents. This guide will cover everything you need to know about Vel’Koz in Wild Rift, including his abilities, ideal item builds, and helpful tips to help you win your games.
Wild Rift Vel’Koz Guide: Skill Analysis
Passive: Organic Deconstruction
When you hit an enemy with an ability, you apply a stack of Deconstruction that lasts 7 seconds. If an enemy gets 3 stacks, they take bonus damage that ignores their defenses.
Skill 1: Plasma Fission
This ability fires a blast of plasma that damages enemies with magic and slows them down. When the blast reaches its maximum distance or hits an enemy, it divides into two smaller blasts that shoot off at angles. You can also manually split the blast by using the ability again. If you defeat an enemy with this ability, you’ll regain some of your mana.

Skill 2: Void Rift
Creates a tear in reality that damages enemies within it. After a short pause, the tear explodes, dealing additional magic damage.
Charge: Gains a charge every some seconds, storing up to 2 charges.
Skill 3: Tectonic Disruption
This ability creates an explosion in a targeted area, dealing magic damage to nearby enemies and briefly lifting them into the air (0.75 seconds). If you cast this ability close to Vel’Koz, it creates a special effect that pushes enemies back. The closer the explosion is to Vel’Koz, the farther the enemies will be pushed.
Ultimate ability: Life Form Disintegration Ray
Passive: Enemies with max stacks of Deconstruction are marked as Researched.
This ability fires a powerful beam of energy in the direction you’re aiming with the joystick. It deals significant magic damage to enemies caught in the beam and slows them by 20%. Each time the beam hits an enemy, they receive a stack of ‘Deconstruction’ every 0.7 seconds.
Researched enemies take an equal amount of true damage instead.
Skill-up method for Bard
Focus on leveling up Skill 2 first, as it makes the early game easier and lets you safely harass opponents. Next, upgrade Skill 1 for reliable damage, especially after using a slowing or stunning ability. After that, improve Skill 3, and always unlock and upgrade your ultimate ability as soon as you can.

Wild Rift Vel’Koz Guide: Gameplay Tips
Vel’Koz is a powerful Mage champion known for dealing significant damage, harassing opponents from a distance, and providing helpful utility in team fights. This guide will explain how to play Vel’Koz effectively throughout the different stages of a game – the early, mid, and late game – to help you master this champion.
Early Game
At the beginning of the game, focus on earning gold safely and bothering your opponents by using your long-range abilities. Start by using your special ability, Void Rift, to quickly eliminate weaker enemy units and build up a passive bonus. Then, use Plasma Fission to attack enemies from a safe distance, trying to split the attack in a way that’s hard for them to avoid. This also helps you regain energy when you defeat units.
During this part of the game, Tectonic Disruption is key for getting out of tough situations. Only use it to attack if you’re sure the enemy jungler isn’t around, as it’s best saved for escaping. Focus on hitting your abilities to build up your passive and deal extra damage. You can also control the minion wave near your tower to play it safe and slow down the enemy’s farm.

As a player, I’ve found that working closely with my roaming support and jungler is key – we can really set up some great plays around objectives! Getting a couple of early rotations to lanes can give us a big advantage, especially when Rift Herald is about to spawn. To help make those early plays happen smoothly, here’s a skill combo that’s worked wonders for me:
Skill 3 + Skill 2 + Skill 1
Mid Game
Once you unlock Vel’Koz’s ultimate ability, his power significantly increases in the mid-game. Focus on using it when enemies are stunned or otherwise unable to move, or after they’ve used abilities that let them quickly escape. This will help you deal a lot of damage and secure a kill.
During the middle of the game, focus on quickly eliminating enemy minions in your lane using your long-range abilities. Once your lane is clear, immediately move to help your jungler secure Rift Herald or Dragon. You excel at controlling space and catching enemies in the jungle’s narrow passages. Start fights by using Plasma Fission to slow them down, making it easier to hit with Tectonic Disruption. Then, quickly follow up with two casts of Void Rift for a lot of damage and to build up your passive ability stacks.
Remember to move between lanes, offering vision by placing wards near important neutral objectives, and supporting your team’s attacks. Here’s a strong ability combination to use with Vel’Koz as the game progresses into the mid and late stages:
Skill 1 + Skill 3 + Skill 2 + Ultimate ability
Late Game
Where you stand is crucial when playing Vel’Koz. In the late game, he becomes a major source of damage, but you need to stay far back, behind your teammates. Focus on dealing as much damage as possible to the enemy team using the extra damage from his unique ability.

To win the game, use your ultimate ability at the right moment. It works best when enemies are slowed or lifted into the air. Aim it at groups of enemies, especially those who are close together, to deal a lot of true damage. Don’t try to get too many enemies in one shot – cancel the ability if you’re in danger. Now, let’s look at which champions are strong against Vel’Koz, as well as his strengths and weaknesses.
| Champions that counter Vel’Koz | Champions that Vel’Koz is strong against |
|---|---|
| Ekko | Lux |
| Irelia | Corki |
| Zed | Twisted Fate |
