After Andor Won A Major Emmy, I’m Mad All Over Again About The Star Who Got Snubbed

The 77th Primetime Emmy Awards began on September 14th, hosted by Nate Bargatze, who aimed to keep acceptance speeches concise. I was hoping many of the nominees from the 2025 Emmy nominations would win, and I was particularly eager to see Andor succeed during the live broadcast, as covered in TopMob’s live blog.

Although *Star Wars* didn’t win the award for best drama, its writer, Tony Gilroy, did take home a trophy for Outstanding Writing. And revisiting the episode that won him the award just reminds me how disappointed I was that Genevieve O’Reilly wasn’t recognized for what I thought was a truly deserving performance.

Andor’s Big Primetime Emmys Win

Tony Gilroy, the writer behind the show *Andor*, won an award for Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for the episode “Welcome to the Rebellion.” This episode was a major turning point in the second season. He beat out strong contenders like Dan Erickson from *Severance*, Will Smith (a different Will Smith than you might think!) from *Slow Horses*, Mike White from *The White Lotus*, and R. Scott Gemmill and Joe Sachs from *The Pitt*. It was a tough category, and Gilroy wasn’t sure he’d win until his name was called.

The popular *Star Wars* series received a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series but didn’t win, with *The Pitt* taking home the award. However, Season 2 did win several Creative Arts Emmys for its exceptional Production Design, Picture Editing, Special Visual Effects, and Fantasy/Sci-Fi Costumes.

Even though *Andor* didn’t win the award for Best Drama – *The Bear* did – there’s still a lot to be happy about, especially Diego Luna’s gracious reaction to not being nominated. However, Genevieve O’Reilly truly shone in *Andor* Season 2, and the show winning for its writing makes it particularly disappointing that she wasn’t recognized with a nomination herself.

Genevieve O’Reilly Deserved A Nomination

Season 2 of *Andor* was truly exceptional – some of the best *Star Wars* content ever created, in my opinion. I loved the first season, but I wasn’t ready for how captivating Genevieve O’Reilly’s performance would make Mon Mothma’s storyline this time around.

She truly shined this season, especially in the memorable, and potentially awkward, drunken dance scene – which she pulled off brilliantly. The peak of her story in *Andor* was arguably in “Welcome to the Rebellion,” where she delivered a moving speech to the Galactic Senate before leaving her old life behind.

Seriously, watch this scene from the Emmy-winning episode and tell me it didn’t deserve an Emmy for O’Reilly.

I can be fair – I’m not arguing that Genevieve O’Reilly *deserved* to win Outstanding Supporting Actress. Katherine LaNasa ultimately took home the award for *The Pitt*. The other nominees included Patricia Arquette (*Severance*), Carrie Coon, Julianne Nicholson, Parker Posey, Natasha Rothwell, and Aimee Lou Wood, all from *The White Lotus*.

It felt disappointing that Fiona Shaw wasn’t even nominated for an Emmy, especially with *The White Lotus* receiving so much recognition. While congratulations to all the nominees, it was frustrating to see the show get three nominations without her being included. With *Andor* finished after Season 2, this was likely her best chance to be recognized for her critically acclaimed performance as Mon Mothma. Although she’ll be back as the character in *Ahsoka* Season 2, that show didn’t receive the same level of critical praise as *Andor* did in its first season.

It’s great that Genevieve O’Reilly can see the Emmy win for *Andor* as a recognition of her performance – the winning episode really highlighted her character. And congratulations to Tony Gilroy for winning such a prestigious award for a sci-fi show! Genre series don’t often win big awards, and *Andor* truly deserved it.

You can now stream the Emmy-winning series *Andor* on Disney+ if you have a subscription.
