Sean Penn had a relaxed lunch in Malibu on Saturday with a colleague who also works in the film industry.

The 65-year-old looked stylish in a teal green T-shirt, paired with khaki hiking pants and beige hiking shoes.

His salt and pepper hair and beard were neatly trimmed. 

I spotted him having a really laid-back lunch with Marianna Brennand, the filmmaker from Brazil. They were enjoying the patio at a restaurant, and another woman joined them too. It seemed like a casual get-together.

The filmmaker chose a simple, classic outfit: white pants, a long blue button-down shirt, and black loafers.

After they finished eating, Penn and Brennand drove off in his Rivan truck, likely heading to prepare for the premiere of Brennand’s new movie at The Ross House in the Hollywood Hills.

The Oscar winner is an executive producer of Manas. It is Brennand’s first feature feature film.

The filmmaker not only directed the movie but also helped write the story about Marcielle, a thirteen-year-old girl living on Marajó Island in northern Brazil.

The story centers around a community that turns a blind eye to violence against women and children. When Marcielle faces past traumas and decides to forge her own path, she changes her family’s future forever.

Sean Penn and Julia Roberts, both 57, hosted a screening of the award-winning drama. The film has received accolades at several international festivals, including those in Venice and Palm Springs.

Roberts opted for a relaxed yet stylish look, pairing a black button-down shirt with wide-leg jeans and black heels. Her reddish-brown hair was worn in loose, layered waves.

The Academy Award winner wore natural looking makeup behind her dark framed glasses.

Oh my gosh, he was wearing *the* outfit. A simple blue button-down, but with that navy jacket… and jeans, of course, with those perfect white sneakers! I swear, even his casual look is breathtaking. I noticed every single detail, obviously.

Brennand had a classic look, wearing a white and gray striped button-down shirt with wide-leg black pants and pumps.

Fifty-six-year-old actress Dira Paes, known for her role in Manas, looked fit and stylish in a black v-neck tank top and wide-leg white pants.

In May, Brennand received the Kering Women in Motion Emerging Talent Award at Cannes. The award included $57,000 to help fund her next film.

Brennand, who began her career as a documentarian, spent more than a decade researching the topic.

I first learned about Manas a little over 10 years ago when I discovered the sexual exploitation of young girls and women happening on boats in the Tajapuru region of Marajó Island, Brazil, as I explained to Variety.

Initially, as a filmmaker, I wanted to create a documentary exposing and criticizing this issue. I began working on it, but quickly realized it would be impossible to tell the story honestly and ethically in that format.

Sean Penn explained to Variety that he felt driven to help promote the film as an executive producer, believing it carries on a significant tradition of Brazilian cinema.

Manas is a powerfully moving and significant film. It left me feeling completely shaken and deeply affected, like I needed time to recover after watching it.

KimStim has acquired the US distribution rights to the film and will release it in select theaters. This limited release is intended to help the film qualify for submission as Brazil’s entry for the Academy Awards.

If Brennand’s film is accepted, she would become only the third woman ever to submit a film for consideration in this category. And if nominated, she’d be the first woman from Brazil to receive an Oscar nomination for Best International Feature Film.
