Ego Nwodim announces she’s leaving ‘Saturday Night Live’ in latest cast shake-up

Actress Ego Nwodim, who’s become beloved among fans of “Saturday Night Live,” declared on Friday that she would be departing from the show following a run of seven seasons. This decision came after whispers spread that the cast was preparing for Season 51, set to start in October.

On Friday, Nwodim announced her departure from SNL via Instagram, saying, “It’s always tough to know when to call it a night at an amazing gathering. However, after seven incredible seasons, I have chosen to move on.

As a devoted cinematic enthusiast, I cannot express enough gratitude to Lorne for giving me this extraordinary opportunity. My fellow actors, the talented writers, and the dedicated crew – thank you for your brilliance, support, and friendship throughout this journey. Each week on that stage was a priceless lesson, teaching me more than I ever imagined possible. The memories we created together, along with the laughter that filled our days, will be cherished by me forever.

An NBC representative verified that Nwodim chose to explore different ventures instead.

Since my joining the cast in 2018, I’ve undeniably emerged as a prominent figure, breathtaking audiences with unforgettable portrayals such as that of Lisa from Temecula. More recently, I’ve captivated crowds by embodying my stand-up comedian persona, the charismatic Miss Eggy.

Initially, Pedro Pascal burst into laughter, which promptly caused his ‘Saturday Night Live’ co-stars to follow suit. The ensuing moment was characterized by utter chaos.

Nwodim was taken aback by the unexpected success of some of her popular sketches, particularly “Lisa from Temecula.” In an interview with The Times in 2023, she expressed, “There’s just this enchanting quality about it that you can’t predict what will resonate and strike a chord so powerfully. And it did – I never would have anticipated such impact.

Apart from her stint on the NBC sketch comedy show, Nwodim has been featured in various television series such as “Poker Face”, “It’s Florida, Man”, “Mr. Throwback”, and “Good Times”. Furthermore, she is slated to feature in the upcoming Netflix comedy movie “Little Brother” alongside John Cena.

As a dedicated cinephile, I must share that among those bidding adieu to “SNL” this season, we have the talented Heidi Gardner, Michael Longfellow, Devon Walker, and Emil Wakim. It’s always bittersweet to see such gifted individuals moving on, but their future projects will surely be worth watching!

Television

Following the successful 50th season of “Saturday Night Live,” five fresh faces are set to join the sketch comedy show, a move made after several members chose to leave.

Apart from the original cast members, five fresh faces have joined the group: Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, Ben Marshall (who’s also worked on SNL’s writing team and is famous for his work with the Please Don’t Destroy comedy troupe), Kam Patterson, and Veronika Slowikowska.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but speculate about potential departures among the cast members. One of the breakout stars since joining in 2019, Bowen Yang, expressed his excitement to return and admitted he will deeply miss those who won’t be coming back during a recent episode of his podcast “Las Culturistas.” He also took a moment to pay tribute to Cecily Strong’s remarkable impact on the series.

Chloe Fineman, who became part of the cast in 2019, recently expressed on Extra TV that the modifications to the team were “quite surprising.

She expressed that the show was quite moving, with moments of emotional upheaval and sorrow. She hasn’t fully come to terms with it yet, but what she can say is that there’s a significant change in the cast. However, she pointed out that those who departed will always remain a part of her life, and she’s looking forward to meeting the new additions.

The 51st season of “Saturday Night Live” premieres Oct. 4.
