Erin Doherty is almost unrecognisable as she sports blunt blonde wig, blue eyeshadow and 70s style dress as she’s spotted filming new BBC drama California Avenue for the first time

Erin Doherty underwent a significant transformation during filming, as she was barely recognizable while working on the upcoming BBC series, California Avenue, for the first time on Thursday.

The 33-year-old actress appeared strikingly reminiscent of the ’70s in her retro outfit and striking new hairstyle and makeup, while filming with a young male co-star dressed in a homemade astronaut suit.

Regardless of her past portrayal of Princess Anne in Seasons 3 and 4 of the popular series The Crown, Erin appeared quite different when she took on the role of Lela in the newly released six-episode series.

Underneath a blonde wig featuring a straight-across bang, she concealed her natural hair, while donning the popular trend of smoky blue eye shadow from that time period.

She wore a distinctive, psychedelic maxi dress with a blue-green geometric design, paired with a sizable cream handbag.

The actress from the show “Adolescence” accessorized her ’70s-inspired look with a fitted jean trench coat and a timeless paisley scarf draped elegantly around her neck.

In the scene, Erin, visibly distressed, was seen hurrying towards the young actor, who seemed to be portraying her son’s role.

Whenever I wasn’t busy with filming, I’d take a moment to ensure my dialogue was spot-on, and in those instances, I would retrieve the carefully folded script from my bag.

The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) declared in June that California Avenue will be produced, with BAFTA-winning filmmaker Hugo Blick handling both writing and directing duties.

In my enthusiastic account, I’d say: “I’m thrilled to share that this six-episode journey is a heartwarming tale filled with laughter and affection, nestled within a tranquil caravan park hidden by verdant English countryside, surrounded by canals.

However, the tranquility of this secluded realm is shattered upon the unexpected arrival of Lela, portrayed by Erin, and her young, fugitive child, seeking shelter in this concealed universe.

In this very place, a broken family will find unity, long-buried secrets and haunting fears will finally be laid to rest, and an unforeseen bond of affection will be formed.

The series features an impressive lineup of talented actors, including Bill Nighy and Helena Bonham Carter portraying Lela’s parents, Jerry and Eddie, alongside Tom Burke who plays the enigmatic circus performer, Cooper.

In discussing the program, Hugo expressed: “For several decades now, I’ve aimed to delve into the realm of television fiction through comedy, political narratives, or even westerns. California Avenue represents my investigation into the individuals who sparked my desire to delve into storytelling.

In the upcoming television series, Erin makes her initial appearance a few days before the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards, which will occur on a Sunday evening in Los Angeles.

As a passionate admirer, I can hardly contain my excitement as the radiant star of “A Thousand Blows” is teetering on the brink of history! With her recent Emmy nomination for her exceptional portrayal of Briony Ariston in the phenomenal Netflix series “Adolescence,” it seems that this talented actress is one step away from claiming her first Emmy victory. The anticipation is palpable, and I can hardly wait to see her shine on the awards stage!

The single-shot scene, where she portrayed the character Briony, a child psychologist interrogating teenage murder suspect Jamie Miller (played by Owen Cooper), was praised by the Guardian as the “most remarkable part” of an impressive collection of four exceptional episodes.

Erin is nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Award in a Limited Series or Movie, but she’s facing tough competition from Ruth Negga, Deirdre O’Connell, Chloë Sevigny, Jenny Slate, and her co-star from Adolescence, Christine Tremarco.

The show, which has become one of Netflix’s all-time viewing favorites and garnered 13 Emmy nominations, is set to contend in the Best Limited or Anthology Series category on its own.

Stephen Graham has been nominated for Best Actor in the category of Limited Series or Movies for his portrayal of Eddie Miller. Additionally, he was recognized for his exceptional writing skills, sharing a nomination for Best Writing with his co-creator Jack Thorne.

Ashley Walters is set to face off with Owen in the Supporting Actor category for Limited Series or Movies, for his portrayal of DI Luke Bascombe.

Should Owen grab the gong, he’ll establish himself as the youngest male victor ever in the 76-year span of the ‘Television Oscars’.
