Gary Lineker takes aim at the BBC as he wins major gong at the NTAs and declares ‘this demonstrates that it’s ok to speak up for those who have no voice’

At Wednesday’s National Television Awards, Gary Lineker criticized the BBC upon receiving a significant accolade.

In a shock win, the broadcaster won the Best Presenter gong, ending Ant & Dec’s 23-year streak.

In a heartfelt manner, Gary conveyed to the audience at London’s O2 arena that he is well aware of the reasons behind his victory.

Additionally, it seems our platform can be used occasionally to advocate for those who can’t speak for themselves. Your support in this matter truly means the world to me.

Gary, who was 64 years old, concluded his 26-year tenure as the main host of the renowned show during the last season. Starting from that point forward, Mark Chapman, Gabby Logan, and Kelly Cates have taken over as rotating hosts to replace him.

In simpler terms, Gary, known as the longest-running host of the show and earning £1.35 million annually from BBC as their highest-paid presenter, announced in November 2024 that he would be stepping down and made his final appearance on the show in May.

Although he was scheduled to lead the BBC’s live broadcast for the 2025-26 FA Cup and the 2026 World Cup, his tenure ended prematurely following a controversial social media post about Zionism that included an image of a rat, which has been interpreted as anti-Semitic.

He apologised but said it was ‘best for all concerned’ if he left completely.

During a speech on Wednesday, Gary expressed that Match of the Day is the most renowned football program on television, and he commended his past coworkers.

I’ve had the pleasure of working with countless remarkable individuals, both on and off screen. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of them.
