Tammy Hembrow’s ex-husband Matt Zukowski reveals how much he’s ‘changed’ since their marriage ended: ‘I can be myself again

It has been a tumultuous 12 months for Matt Zukowski.

In June, he ended his marriage, which had lasted only seven months with Tammy Hembrow. Since then, she’s been involved romantically with Australian Rules Football player, Bailey Smith.

In the aftermath of my recent breakup with the popular social media personality, I’ve taken a deep introspective look at myself this past week, and I can honestly say that the experience has brought about significant changes within me.

Discussing on their “Where’s Your Head At?” podcast with Anna McEvoy, Matt openly shared that his mental state is significantly improved compared to what it was a year prior.

The disclosure emerged following Anna’s query to Matt earlier on Thursday, ‘Are you alright?’ prior to R U OK? Day: ‘Did everything turn out all right for you today?’

Responding, Matt admitted to being a completely different person.

‘Yes, I would like to say that I actually am okay,’ he said.

Over the past few months, I’ve found myself undergoing quite a transformation. Recently, while revisiting some old recordings from last year, I couldn’t help but notice a striking difference between then and now – it seems as though the soulful spark that once illuminated my words has been reignited. A year ago, listening to those tapes… I was a hollow echo of myself.

‘I’m completely different now. I can be myself again.’

Anna agreed with Matt’s self-assessment, saying that he seemed ‘lighter’ recently.

He then recalled a story that helped illustrate his point.

He mentioned the other day that he had driven by a store, and he wondered aloud, ‘When was my last visit to this store?’

I remembered it clearly as I had made a phone call there and discussed something with my friend.

He added, “‘A year ago today, it’s almost hard to believe… What a stark contrast – the person I was during that phone call compared to the one driving past that store is like night and day.’

As a devoted follower, I can share that delving into the perspective of ‘old Matt’ was so profound that it moved me to shedding tears.

He imagined being in my position, standing in the store. It felt like I was shutting down all over again, he explained.

In a very moving moment, I found myself shedding tears in the car. My heart went out to him, feeling his desperation so deeply.

In an emotional burst, I couldn’t help but cry in the car. It was for him and the overwhelming sense of powerlessness he experienced at that moment.

At certain moments, things became incredibly challenging for me. I reached the absolute lowest point in my life. There were days when I found it hard even to get out of bed. It’s quite remarkable how one can progress from such a state to where I stand today.

Matt was quick to reassure anyone in a similar situation that it ‘does get better.’

He didn’t delve deeply into the topic, but if you ever find yourself struggling to express who you truly are, or feeling down and blue, know that things will improve.

He added that being surrounded by a strong support network had been essential.

He shared that a key factor supporting him throughout the past year was his close relationships with friends and relatives.

‘It’s very important to be there for someone that you can see struggling.’

Matt and Tammy got engaged in December 2023 after just three months of dating.

Approximately one year after their initial commitment, in November 2024, they officially got married. However, whispers of potential separation started spreading as early as this year.

In June, the pair announced they were divorcing after seven months of marriage.

Tammy has since moved on with AFL star Bailey Smith.

Matt later expressed that he experienced a sense of “pain” as he witnessed Tammy swiftly moving forward following their split, implying that he was the one who ended their relationship, although there are rumors suggesting Tammy might have been the one to initiate the end.
