Watch the emotional trailer for Hugh Jackman’s new biopic based on “compelling” true story

The first trailer has landed for Song Sung Blue, starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson.

Drawing inspiration from real-life events, the movie showcases Mike Sardina, portrayed by Jackman, and his wife Claire, played by Hudson. When they encounter tough financial difficulties, they create a heartwarming Neil Diamond cover band as a means to lift their spirits.

In the trailer, it’s clear that Mike aspires not just to imitate Neil Diamond, but to truly interpret him, as Claire puts it, “Mike, it’s not about being a Neil Diamond impersonator; you aim to be a Neil Diamond interpreter.

The pair started appearing as Lightning and Thunder, and due to their vibrant live shows, they quickly gained recognition and became popular figures in their hometown of Milwaukee.

Yet, it’s not just a “pleasant cacophony” that they experience as they navigate both triumphs and tribulations, balancing aspirations and familial responsibilities.

The film “Song Sung Blue” was both directed and penned by Craig Brewer, who earlier worked on films like “Hustle & Flow” and the more recent sequel to “Coming to America,” titled “Coming 2 America” (released in 2021).

In addition to Jackman and Hudson, the movie features Michael Imperioli from The Sopranos, Jim Belushi, and musician-actor King Princess, known for her work in Nine Perfect Strangers.

Without a doubt, the movie features numerous songs by Neil Diamond, such as ‘Sweet Caroline,’ which was previewed in the trailer, along with ‘The Boat That I Row.’

The song “Song Sung Blue” draws inspiration from a 2008 documentary titled the same way, which was skillfully directed by Greg Kohs. This captivating documentary won over both the audience and the jury in the Documentary Feature category at the Slamdance Film Festival.

When discussing the doc at the time, Variety characterized it as captivating. They further stated, “Dysfunction and delusion are prevalent throughout an extraordinary narrative that initially appears lighthearted and comical, but later unfolds into a blend of drama and empathy for its characters’ unfortunate journey.

Song Sung Blue hits US cinemas on 25 December 2025 and UK cinemas on 1 January 2026.
