Anticipated for release next year is an animated movie that leverages AI tools from OpenAI. This development may spark discussions within Hollywood about the part AI plays in the film industry.
Critterz” is a movie inspired by a 2023 AI-animated short of the same name that poked fun at nature documentaries. In this film, animated woodland creatures challenge their stereotypical portrayals as passive characters on screen. The production of the movie is a collaboration between Vertigo Films, based in Britain, and Native Foreign, a creative agency and production company located in Culver City that specializes in AI-driven storytelling.
Nik Kleverov, the chief creative officer at Native Foreign and executive producer of ‘Critterz’ short, stated that a major AI tool provider has demonstrated serious dedication towards this being achievable. This move could potentially pave the way for more AI projects to emerge, possibly triggering a surge of innovative storytelling.

Warner Bros. Discovery has charged AI company Midjourney with intentionally and deliberately violating our copyrighted materials. This action places them alongside Disney and Universal Pictures in this allegation.
The significant breakthrough in computer animation for full-length movies occurred approximately 30 years ago when Pixar introduced “Toy Story.” Following its triumph, computer animation found a permanent place and acceptance in the realm of family-friendly films.
The news was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
OpenAI is just supplying the technology, not offering financial aid for the movie, a representative stated. The team behind StudioCanal’s “Paddington in Peru” has been recruited as well. Only a small crew of around 20 individuals are working on “Critterz”, according to Kleverov, with a production budget under $30 million. In comparison, animated films often involve hundreds of people and can have budgets reaching up to $150-$200 million, especially if they’re predominantly made in the U.S.
In his words, some team members for this upcoming movie haven’t worked on artificial intelligence tasks previously. One individual, in fact, collaborated on the 1996 “Space Jam” production featuring Michael Jordan. Unlike traditional human animators who sketch characters based on specific requirements, OpenAI’s tools will be employed to translate those sketches into storyboards and frames. The movie is set to premiere in May following approximately nine months of development.
The aim, Kleverov said, was to create a “really great film.”
He mentioned that when people are viewing “Critterz”, the furthest thing from his mind is artificial intelligence. While he acknowledges that AI will always be relevant, he believes we’re on the brink of a cinematic revolution due to the increased ability to tell numerous stories with independence.
The news emerges amidst a heated discussion in Hollywood regarding the boundaries of AI application. This topic was highly contentious during the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes, and moreover, major studios like Warner Bros. Discovery, The Walt Disney Company, and Comcast’s Universal Pictures have taken legal action against AI company Midjourney Inc., alleging copyright violations.
