Was Eve Myles’ “addictive” BBC thriller based on a true story? Here’s the real-life inspiration

I can’t help but feel ecstatic about the gripping four-part thriller, “The Guest,” starring Eve Myles and Gabrielle Creevy. This riveting series is now available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, and I can hardly wait to see each episode unfold!

Following its success and numerous accolades, viewers have often pondered whether the show is a depiction of real events. Interestingly enough, several scenes were inspired by the personal experiences of screenwriter Matthew Barry.

In “The Guest,” we meet Ria, a struggling cleaning lady from a humble background, who takes on a job for the prosperous entrepreneur Fran (Myles). Over time, they form a strong bond of friendship. However, as their relationship deepens, Ria is unwittingly pulled into a chilling psychological trap with fatal outcomes.

In an interview with Radio Times, screenwriter Barry revealed that several aspects of his personal experiences served as inspiration for the central ideas of the show. Being a working-class individual from Cardiff myself, I’ve always been fascinated by themes related to class and social mobility,” he explained. “There are instances in the first episode that are directly based on my own life experiences.

During his time at Warwick University, Barry recognized that he had not been exposed to certain opportunities due to not attending a private school. This realization, along with many experiences he encountered during and after university, is what inspired Fran’s speech in the first episode about people following different sets of rules.

After its initial airing, the show titled “The Guest” has been warmly appreciated. In our critique, we labeled it as “impossibly hard to resist” and a “wild journey that swiftly escalates from calm to exhilarating in an instant”.

Simultaneously, The Guardian highly praised The Guest for its top-notch cast and gripping narrative, labeling it as a “rapid, intense, absurd thriller”. Expressing admiration for Greevy and Myles’ outstanding performances, The Standard contended that though the plot could seem silly at times, The Guest excels due to the intriguing dynamic between these characters.

In an interview with the BBC, Barry shared the origins of his series. “The concept for ‘The Guest’ sprang from my affection for ’90s thrillers,’ particularly films like ‘The Hand That Rocks the Cradle’ and ‘Pacific Heights’,” he stated.

My intention was to craft an engaging, intricate mystery, yet from the standpoint of a relatable, blue-collar protagonist.

All episodes of The Guest are now available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
