Sylvia Young’s funeral: Alexandra Burke, Denise Van Outen and Nicole Appleton lead mourners paying tribute to stage school pioneer who launched Amy Winehouse’s career

The world of TV and music united at Sylvia Young’s funeral on Friday morning.

As a devoted admirer, I had the privilege of joining others in honoring the trailblazing stage school founder, led by the inspiring trio of Alexandra Burke, Denise Van Outen, and Nicole Appleton.

Sylvia, renowned for kickstarting the careers of artists like Amy Winehouse, Rita Ora, Billie Piper, and Spice Girl Emma Bunton, passed away at the age of 86 in July.

On July 30, it was announced by West End star Frances Ruffelle, who is also the mom of pop singer Eliza Doolittle, that her own mother had passed away peacefully, with loved ones by her side.

Several renowned performers and musicians in Britain can attribute their careers to a groundbreaking educator, who established her namesake school back in 1972.

Initially starting as part-time lessons in the East End of London, I found myself enrolled in a school that eventually flourished into a yearly £14,400 institution. The school is well-known for fostering budding talents, boasting an impressive roster of British showbiz alumni.

Additionally, noteworthy attendees were pop singer Dua Lipa, TV host Denise Van Outen, and musician Tom Fletcher from the band McFly.

Denise Van Outen acknowledged Sylvia Young as a significant influence in her career. During an interview, she shared that Young’s advice was to not limit herself but to explore various opportunities, ensuring she would always remain busy.
