Outlander star Caitríona Balfe’s “compelling” British thriller is now available to watch in the UK

As a devoted fan, I’m absolutely thrilled to share that “The Cut,” a gripping psychological thriller graced by the talents of Caitríona Balfe and Orlando Bloom, has officially made its way to our screens here in the UK!

In this movie, we find Bloom playing a retired boxer seeking another championship. His tough coach, Boz, portrayed by John Turturro, demands a strict weight-loss regimen for him as the story unfolds.

In order to lose more than 25 pounds within a span of six days, the boxer is subjected to rigorous training as he strives to meet the weight requirement. However, his unusual and sometimes extreme methods to reach this goal catch the attention of his wife, Caitlin (Balfe), who expresses concern.

Following its grand debut at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival in September 2024, the much-awaited sports thriller has now made its way to UK theaters, where it’s currently being screened.

Produced by Justin Bull and helmed by Sean Ellis, the film “The Cut” has earned favorable remarks from critics so far, boasting a commendable 79% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 28 reviews.

In a review by The New York Times, it was pointed out that Bloom delivers his part with an intense dedication reminiscent of untamed wildness. Moreover, although Turturro has often played villains in the past, here his refusal to be even slightly likable results in a genuinely terrifying portrayal.

In their opinion, the script is rich with symbolism, yet direct in its delivery. However, director Sean Ellis maintains a relentless focus, according to The Financial Times. Similarly, The Playlist found it captivating and expressed positivity.

The movie attempts multiple elements simultaneously, such as a flashback narrative that isn’t entirely cohesive. However, the overall effect is largely due to the powerful, transformative acting of Orlando Bloom in his role as an undisclosed Irish fighter, as pointed out by Variety.

As a gamer, I found myself growing increasingly disenchanted with the film. The more the British director Sean Ellis nudged and stimulated my gaming senses, the cheesier it felt. This movie about shedding pounds had the potential to be streamlined, but it could have been more engaging if it had undergone a tighter edit.

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that after starring in Outlander, Sam Heughan (Balfe) has taken on another captivating role! This time, he’ll be gracing our screens as Mrs. Dashwood in an upcoming British period drama adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. I can hardly wait!

The Cut is in cinemas now.
