An unusual occurrence is that the true crime series, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox, is being produced by Amanda Knox herself. This eight-part Hulu drama is based on the real-life murder case in which Amanda Knox, an American student abroad, was implicated for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy, in 2007. After a highly publicized trial, she spent four years serving a 26-year sentence before her murder conviction was eventually overturned.
In Episode 4, airing September 3rd, reenacts one of the most startling moments from the trial. Actress Grace Van Patten portrays Knox and captivates the courtroom audience in Perugia, Italy on Valentine’s Day by donning a white t-shirt emblazoned with the phrase “All You Need Is Love” in pink lettering.
In the episode, after Knox enters the courtroom as portrayed by Patten, the show transitions to fictional street interviews with Italians expressing their opinions about Knox’s shirt. A young woman finds it “disgusting,” and another person calls it “embarrassing.” A senior woman argues that Knox is mocking the city, the country, and even the grief of the Kercher family. Knox’s legal team is outraged, stating they never considered advising Knox on court attire, but they also haven’t represented a client who has received global media attention like Knox before.
Knox was seen smiling while wearing the t-shirt, which caused quite a commotion. The Daily Mail published an article titled “All you need is love: ‘Foxy Knoxy’ delivers Valentine T-shirt message to the murder court,” reporting that she listened to the Beatles song “Let It Be” in prison. Newsweek stated that it seemed nobody on her all-male legal team had advised her on what not to wear during her murder trial.

Knox shares with TIME that the shirt was given by her stepmother as a token of affection. She understood Knox’s deep-seated love for The Beatles and how he often sang their songs for comfort during tough times, so she wanted to express her love and support in a simple gesture.
When someone asked her why she wore a love-themed shirt to court, she explained that her lawyers had encouraged her to be authentic. Since it was Valentine’s Day, she would normally wear such a shirt in her everyday life. Despite being in trial, she felt compelled to express her appreciation for the love and support from her family and friends during this difficult period, so she decided to wear the shirt even in court.
Knox intends the series to serve as a means for her to retell her own story. In her words, “The series portrays the journey of a young woman who has endured a difficult situation, endeavoring to regain control over her life. Like all forms of art, it seeks to convert raw, painful experiences into something aesthetically pleasing, identifiable, and ultimately inspiring for its audience.
