How The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Vera Farmiga Stepped In When The Director Wanted To De-Age Her And Patrick Wilson For The Film

In contemporary films, it’s not unusual to see Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) being used to make actors appear younger than their actual age. Over the years, this technology has significantly improved, although it still encounters some challenges. Remarkably, it performs its intended function quite well, which is why director Michael Chaves, working on The Conjuring: Last Rites, decided to employ this technology in the upcoming film.

The inaugural scene of the last Conjuring movie features a nostalgic flashback showcasing the young versions of characters Ed and Lorainne Warren, typically played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga. As Chaves explained to EW, he had a clear vision for depicting the younger personas when planning this sequence, stating:

My answer, with full confidence, without a doubt, was, ‘No problem. We’re going to de-age them.’

In the past, films often cast younger actors to portray younger versions of characters due to lack of alternative methods. Today, however, movies can opt for Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) to digitally de-age actors, a choice increasingly prevalent in cinematography. Although it’s feasible to find a convincing young actor who embodies the character, employing CGI can yield a more authentic representation of the character. Additionally, this technique enables the main cast members to appear on screen more frequently.

In an unexpected turn of events, the filmmakers initially intended to use digital de-aging for Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring: Last Rites, but upon closer examination of the de-aging process, the director grew uncertain. This led to a change in direction, with the movie opting to cast actors instead. Chaves shared that it was a call from one of his actors that ultimately convinced him to abandon the idea of digital de-aging.

Unexpectedly, Vera calls me out of the blue, and she seems to predict my situation almost instinctively, saying something like, ‘I have a hunch about this. I think you should reconsider your decision.’ At first, her words felt unsettling, confirming some of my concerns, but they also threw a major curveball into everything. I managed to persuade the producers and everyone agrees, which now makes it extremely difficult to alter the plan.

Farmiga contended that switching actors might create an uneasy atmosphere for viewers during this particular scene. Maintaining the main actors on screen would provide a sense of familiarity and comfort that could undermine the intended eeriness. Ultimately, it was decided to recast the roles instead of relying on CGI.

Madison Lawlor and Orion Smith were eventually chosen to portray the younger Lorraine and Ed. Generally speaking, it seems that everyone now agrees that casting the younger actors was a wise decision. Moreover, The Conjuring: Last Rites is expected to be the final film in the series for Wilson and Farmiga, which could potentially pave the way for prequel stories.
