Calling The Split fans! BBC’s new Manchester-set spin-off promises “heart-stopping” drama

The Manchester-set spin-off to The Split has shared some new details following its previous delay.

In February 2024, it became official that the much-loved BBC legal drama was set to have a new spin-off titled “The Split Up“. This series comprises six episodes and delves into the lives of a family of legal professionals based in Manchester.

In September 2024, the production was temporarily halted due to editorial matters. However, by April of the same year, reports surfaced that the work on the spin-off had resumed, and filming was scheduled to start in October, with an anticipated release date in 2026.

Although specifics about its release haven’t been revealed yet, writer Kaamil Shah gave hints about his upcoming legal drama during an interview with RadioTimes.com. He confirmed that the show would feature a team of British Asian writers in its entirety.

They mentioned working with a fresh team of divorce attorneys, who are of British Asian descent, based in Manchester. This project is particularly thrilling due to the involvement of an exceptional showrunner, Ursula Rani Sarma. It’s a unique opportunity to portray diverse stories involving British Asians on screen.

I find it incredibly appealing. I take great pride in contributing to a production that authentically captures the complexity of British Asian life, with scenes that are both intense and heart-pounding, showcasing relatable dramas, entanglements, and enjoyable moments.

Shah, along with Sonali Bhattacharyya and Sumerah Srivastav, noted that Abi Morgan, the mastermind behind the original series, had contributed to the making of the spin-off. He further praised Morgan by referring to her as “generous” in the production process.

The Breakup narrates the story of the Kishan family as they navigate the challenges of running their law firm in the northern part of England. The firm, renowned for its superior quality, honesty, and confidentiality, serves as the preferred choice for the city’s prominent individuals.

However, the fate and reputation of Kishan Law are uncertain as a hidden truth from the past surfaces, causing disarray in both their professional and personal spheres.

In 2018, the drama series titled “The Split” was introduced. This show centered around the character of Hannah Defoe, played by Nicola Walker, who is a divorce lawyer. The ensemble also included Stephen Mangan, Fiona Button, and Annabel Scholey in supporting roles.

After three triumphant seasons, a two-part special named “The Split: Barcelona” was broadcast last year, featuring most of the original cast returning to their roles. As for the primary series, its continuation is uncertain at present; however, Walker hinted that additional specials might be produced in the future.

The Split airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer. The Split Up has no release date.
