In the 2000s, Skins stood out as an innovative TV series for many viewers, offering a raw portrayal of teenage life, complete with exploration of substances, relationships, and nightlife.
On the popular TV show E4, the cast members skyrocketed to fame, but afterwards, some of them openly discussed their experiences, suggesting that they didn’t feel adequately protected during filming, as the young stars alleged.
Megan Prescott recently shared that her role in the series “Skins” motivated her to sign up for the adult subscription site, OnlyFans. She explained to the Daily Mail that since explicit scenes from the show were already being shared online, it seemed logical to capitalize on her persona by generating income from her content.
As a devoted fan, I can proudly share that at the tender age of 16, my twin sister Kathryn and I were fortunate enough to secure the roles of Katie and Emily Finch on the show. At that time, I was just 34 years old, embarking on an exciting journey in the world of acting that would eventually make me part of this captivating series.
As her acting career progressed and financial struggles persisted despite trying various side jobs, she eventually turned to the adult entertainment industry. She initially worked as a dancer in clubs, later moving on to create explicit content for the subscription-based platform, OnlyFans.
In a reflective moment, she noted that while both her adult industry work and acting careers involve performances, the key distinction lies in control. With platforms like OnlyFans, she has the freedom to decide what content she shares, ensuring there’s no unnecessary pressure to do more than necessary.

As I delved deeper into the world of sex work, I unexpectedly discovered my limits more profoundly than I ever did in my acting career. This journey allowed me to identify what makes me feel at ease and what leaves me uneasy.
In addition, I discovered that the worth of my creative work in acting exceeded what I was compensated, offering me valuable insights.
Megan began her acting career at the tender age of 14, eventually securing roles in the television series Silent Witness, Holby City, and various short films as well.
Despite the volatile nature of the industry, her finances were inconsistent, leading her to take up stripping as a job at the age of 22, to help make ends meet while she pursued auditions.
In the year 2020, Megan decided to sign up for OnlyFans, a move she made while holding down a job at a distillery in London under a flexible work arrangement. Unfortunately, her manager declined to place her on temporary leave (furlough) for some time.
Due to having just £300 left in her bank account and being unable to cover her rent, her podcast co-host friend Heaven (from Strippers In The Attic) recommended that she consider using OnlyFans as a means to generate additional income.
Megan shared with me, “You can see that there’s a lot of content featuring you in a sensual manner online, specifically from ‘Skins’, but unfortunately, you aren’t benefiting financially from it anymore.
Upon the recommendation of her friend, Megan joined the platform, where she offers explicit nude photos – advocating strongly for the rights of sex workers.

She admitted she had been quite anxious at first about taking this step, worrying that it might affect her ability to get particular acting jobs in the future.
In her own view, I had been pouring all my effort into striving for success as an actor and a writer for about ten years, but it seemed that my efforts weren’t bearing fruit. She went on to say…
‘And I see sex work as performance. It’s just another type of performative labour.’
Megan further highlighted the connections between acting and the adult entertainment industry by noting that a significant number of actors engage in nudity and intimate scenes on television.
Acting and sex work share many common aspects, yet the strong social taboo associated with sex work persists significantly.
For progress on women’s rights and ensuring personal freedom for women, it’s crucial that we accept and support each woman’s right to make decisions about what happens with her own body.
In difficult times, she found that sex work became a crucial source of support for her. She went on to say, ” frankly, it transformed my life.
Over the years, sex work has served as a vital source of support for me during challenging times. When I was younger, I worked as a stripper, and I feel fortunate to have had the opportunity to engage in that line of work.
It was equally clear that the monetary advantages were substantial. Intriguingly, Megan shared that she stood to make more in just two nights as a dancer compared to an entire month’s work as a security guard.

Apart from sharing her thoughts, Megan also expressed her perspective regarding her role in the E4 drama “Skins,” a show that has faced criticism lately from several actors.
Asked whether she agreed with the critisims, Megan mused: ‘It’s a difficult one.
My significant accomplishments today likely wouldn’t exist without Skins. Since I didn’t attend university or drama school, it essentially served as a crucial stepping stone that enabled me to achieve these milestones without which I might not have been able to do so.
It might be that a bit more attention was needed, but let’s avoid placing blame solely on specific individuals, projects, or environments. Instead, it seems like there are larger factors at play.
It seems reasonable to conclude that in shows from that era, as well as perhaps today, there might be actions performed by individuals that make them uneasy, as they strive to succeed in the entertainment industry.
What’s crucial to recall is that it was a program everyone adored, and I’d go to any length to participate in it. I felt incredibly thankful for being cast in it.
Well, considering the past, I wonder if we could have received a bit more care. Yet, I find myself conflicted because it remains the most remarkable experience in my professional journey.
‘I think two things can exist at once.’

Currently, Megan is drawing upon her background in both acting and the adult entertainment industry for her latest solo performance titled “Really Good Exposure.
Megan plays the role of Molly in a show that is set to premiere in London over the coming week, having previously won awards during its successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival last year.
She depicts a former child actor contemplating entering the adult film industry, following her dismissal by her agent due to discovery of her employment at a nightclub where dancing was involved.
Reflecting thoughtfully, she remarked: ‘This story is somewhat based on the writer’s personal experiences and resembles “Slumdog Millionaire,” yet it features a character who is involved in the adult entertainment industry.’
As a devoted enthusiast, I’ve drawn from various experiences in my personal life and captivating narratives predominantly from the ’90s and early 2000s popular culture. I then synthesized these diverse elements into a single compelling character and a unified tale.
Megan further explained, “All the themes I’m exploring are ones I’ve encountered throughout my life. I’ve spent a significant portion of my career in the adult industries, and I’ve also been involved in entertainment for as long as I can recall.
I aimed to create a play that incorporated elements of my personal life, yet was accessible and inclusive for many viewers.
Many individuals may not have personal encounters with the worlds of adult entertainment or acting, yet a significant number of millennial women, upon reflection, have expressed feelings of relatability towards these industries, stating, “I found a great deal in common with much of what was portrayed.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I aimed to transform some of my personal narratives into engaging content that resonates with a broader spectrum of individuals, making it easier for them to find common ground and connect.

Speaking about exposing a more vulnerable aspect, Megan chuckled: “I’m essentially baring all on that stage. It’s like standing naked in front of everyone, which can be quite exposing and vulnerable.
However, I believe there’s an experience unique to live theater that you can’t find on a screen. So, I decided to approach it sincerely and genuinely.
Instead, she shared her aspiration for attendees of her performance to depart with a fresh perspective and a greater comprehension about the sex work field.
In my enthusiastic pursuit of understanding, I can’t help but express that it’s quite the challenge to win others over due to the heavy social prejudice surrounding the profession of sex work.
In a straightforward manner, I’d rephrase it as: “When I openly advocate for the decriminalization of sex work and improved safety measures, some individuals express concerns about women’s well-being.
Your intentions are truly noble, as they should be, but it would be beneficial to engage with sex workers, explore the nature of the industry, and consider similarities with other sectors to gain a comprehensive understanding.
Megan further expressed her hope that viewers would enjoy the show, observe the character’s treatment in both acting and sex work industries, and finish with thought-provoking questions and a slightly expanded perspective compared to their initial one.
‘I know people don’t think it does, but sex workers rights are integral to to women’s rights.’

As the head of Ugly Mugs’ board (NUM), I remain steadfast in my advocacy, pushing for the security and rights of sex workers. This groundbreaking, nationwide organization aims to offer enhanced access to justice and shielding for individuals within this profession.
‘Sex workers don’t get half of the support that they should get,’ she explained.
Many organizations often state, “We will assist you in departing, but we do not prioritize your safety within the field.” It’s unfortunate.
If the taboo around sex work weren’t so strong, we might be better equipped to protect more women from harm.
In the midst of her involvement with the entertainment industry that focuses on intimate relationships, Megan clarified that she still hasn’t given up acting and intends to take on more roles in the years ahead.
Not, however, at the detriment of giving up her OnlyFans account.
‘It’s been the most freeing thing I’ve ever done,’ she explained.
Catch Megan’s show, “Really Good Exposure,” at the Soho Theatre in London between September 2 and September 13.
