‘I Think The Show Felt Ready To Leave Me’: As SNL’s Devon Walker Opens Up About Exiting The Series, He Reveals The A+ Shows He’d Love To Join Next

During a break between seasons, the cast of Saturday Night Live can sometimes undergo changes, but the unexpected departure of four cast members and one writer in just one week during August 2025 was quite extraordinary. Even current SNL star Bowen Yang expressed his thoughts, while former cast member Punkie Johnson echoed the widespread disbelief. Now, actor Devon Walker has spoken out about his decision to leave and shared his plans for the future.

Last week, it was announced that Devon Walker was one of the four cast members set to leave ‘SNL’. Walker appeared to handle the news quite gracefully, even joking about the fans who were panicking over the changes. In an interview with Rolling Stone, when asked directly if he chose to depart the show, Walker revealed his decision to the publication.

After much contemplation, it seems that the decision for us (me and the show) to part ways was made mutually. I felt a strong desire to explore new opportunities, and I believe the show shared that sentiment. This decision came with significant implications, both in terms of time commitment and personal life. There were several life events I had to miss out on due to my involvement with the show, and I yearned for a different kind of lifestyle. In essence, it feels like we are both eager to turn the page and start fresh.

The TV sitcom on NBC known as Saturday Night Live doesn’t just air on Saturdays; production takes place throughout the entire week, from pitching ideas to rehearsals. So, it’s no surprise that Devon Walker referred to the show as a significant “time investment” and “professional obligation.” Over the course of his three seasons, he was involved in nearly 60 episodes, which seemed to be enough for him.

Lorne Michaels has confirmed changes are underway, with Devon Walker being the initial announcement; this departing Saturday Night Live cast member expressed his vision for the future stage of his career.

As a passionate film enthusiast, the thrill of being part of this show is indescribable! It’s not just about being recognized, but rather having the opportunity to bring to life projects that truly resonate with me. The audience gets a glimpse into my work, and it feels incredible! Now, the journey doesn’t stop here; I’m eager to collaborate with like-minded creators who share my vision for quality and innovation in cinema. Let’s embark on this exciting adventure together!

As I shared the news of my departure from SNL on social media, I couldn’t help but also highlight an exciting new venture – my “My Favorite Lyrics” podcast. This creative outlet has already granted me the opportunity to collaborate with some remarkable individuals beyond the world of Saturday Night Live.

Moreover, this summer has seen me embarking on a standup comedy tour that started back in June and will run through mid-September. Rest assured, my departure from SNL doesn’t mean I’m out of work; quite the contrary!

I’ve even been throwing around some ideas for A+ projects that I’d be thrilled to be a part of. Here’s hoping these opportunities materialize and bring more laughter and joy to us all!

I’m quite fond of the Industry series airing on HBO; it ranks high among my favorite shows. Frankly, I think they could use a bit of comic relief every now and then. For instance, Harper’s character could have a light-hearted companion, say a comedian boyfriend who she doesn’t take too seriously. I’d love to be part of something like that. In fact, I aspire to join the cast of The Bear. If Lionel [Boyce] were to need another character with similar background, I feel well-equipped, having had plenty of experience with melancholy. There are stories about black characters in Succession’s world that have yet to be told; Jesse Armstrong, let’s discuss this. Lastly, the team behind Severance, it’s time we collaborate and delve into a conversation. I’m available now.

At the current moment, Devon Walker isn’t extensively credited in scripted TV roles for acting. However, he has made significant strides as a writer on shows like “Big Mouth” and “Everything’s Trash.” He also featured in the miniseries “Ayo and Rachel Are Single,” which stars Ayo Edebiri from “The Bear.” Given their connection, it’s possible that she could facilitate an introduction for him within “The Bear.” Regardless of what lies ahead, it’s undeniable that these are exceptional shows to aim to be a part of. Though “Succession” has ended, “Industry,” “The Bear,” and “Severance” continue to air.

The departure of Walker from Saturday Night Live was followed by Emil Wakim, a newcomer who added his unique Middle Eastern perspective during his one-season stint. Similarly, Michael Longfellow is no longer with the show, having been a member since Season 48. However, the news that Heidi Gardner is leaving after eight years on the cast caught me off guard.

As a movie lover, I’m curious to find out who else might get cut from Saturday Night Live before the start of Season 50. But don’t worry if they’re gone, you can still catch up on their episodes by subscribing to Peacock and streaming back to your heart’s content!
