Alexander Skarsgård’s Viking epic The Northman has arrived on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.
Under Robert Eggers’ guidance, this movie is built around the ancient tale of Amleth, serving as the foundation for William Shakespeare’s play Hamlet. The narrative unfolds as a young prince named Amleth observes his father King Aurvandill War-Raven (Ethan Hawke) being slain by his treacherous uncle Fjölnir (Claes Bang).
In the grasp of a once beloved uncle who had become an enemy, Amleth, under the watch of Queen Gudrún (played by Nicole Kidman), was forced to leave his homeland, swearing to one day revisit and exact his revenge.

The movie, initially launched in 2022, currently boasts a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 385 reviews. Critics have lauded it as both a gripping bloody revenge saga and a visually stunning masterpiece. Director Robert Eggers has reportedly broadened his creative reach without compromising his distinctive style in this production.

Apart from Netflix, you can also stream the movie on Channel 4’s free streaming service, or choose to rent or purchase it on digital platforms such as Amazon and Sky Store.
At the time of its release, Digital Spy awarded it a 5-star review, calling it both “absorbing” and “brutal.” Other critics were equally impressed, with The Playlist praising it as an “extraordinary feat of visceral filmmaking,” while London Evening Standard went so far as to label it a “masterpiece.
In addition to the previously named actors, the cast includes Anya Taylor-Joy who stars as Furiosa, Gustav Lindh, Willem Dafoe, and the Icelandic musician-composer Björk.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the mastermind behind the chilling 2024 horror sensation, the reimagined “Nosferatu,” Robert Eggers, is once again teaming up with the extraordinary Icelandic poet and co-writer of “The Northman,” Sjón. Together, they’re diving into a new cinematic journey that promises to bring another monstrous figure to life!
The director is preparing to lead the production of a film titled “Werwulf,” a werewolf flick set amidst medieval England in the 13th century. This movie will boast dialogue in authentic Old English, along with subtitles and footnotes to help viewers understand it more easily.
The film is slated for a Christmas Day 2026 release in the US.
The Northman is now available to watch on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.
The latest print issue of Digital Spy is available now! You can purchase the Oasis – Live in ’25 edition at newsstands or online for only £8.99.
