Struggling ‘CBS Evening News’ gets new executive producer

Established producer Kim Harvey has been selected to assume control over the “CBS Evening News,” a program that has experienced a decline in viewership following its latest redesign.

On Thursday, it was disclosed that Harvey is set to take over from Guy Campanile, a “60 Minutes” producer who started with the show last year.

Bill Owens, a former executive producer of “60 Minutes,” brought Campanile on board during his tenure overseeing recent changes in the newscast. As a result, Campanile is set to rejoin the news magazine.

The CBS Evening News” has faced challenges in keeping its audience following Norah O’Donnell’s departure after serving as the anchor for a span of five years.

CBS News brought in John Dickerson and Maurice DuBois as co-anchors, focusing on more in-depth stories similar to “60 Minutes”. However, despite these changes, the program has struggled to compete with ABC’s “World News Tonight with David Muir” and NBC’s “Nightly News with Tom Llamas”.

It’s highly probable that Harvey’s new position signals bigger shifts within the program. This could involve reinstating a solo anchor and adopting a more conventional style for the news broadcast. During her tenure, she served as a reliable right-hand to O’Donnell.

The alterations in anchors are causing disruptions to one of the few remaining conventional TV-viewing habits that are still prevalent. It appears that two out of the three network evening news broadcasts are undergoing significant changes.

Since 2017, Harvey has been part of “CBS Evening News.” Over time, she climbed the ranks and became a senior broadcast producer. Now well-versed in its workings, she’s experienced the transition of three different anchors since her arrival.

According to CBS News President Tom Cibrowski’s statement, Kim possesses a keen news instinct and an impressive history of producing content for both broadcast and cable networks. She is highly respected as a newsroom leader, and her strong bonds with our on-air personalities, producers, and journalists are deeply rooted.

Harvey’s professional journey encompasses time spent at the three significant cable news channels. Her first step in this field was starting off as a video journalist at CNN.

For several years, she worked at Fox News, creating the popular primetime show “The O’Reilly Factor.” However, this show was the network’s leading evening program until Bill O’Reilly stepped down due to claims of inappropriate conduct involving sexual harassment.

As a dedicated member of the MSNBC family, I played a key role in kickstarting two groundbreaking programs: “The Rachel Maddow Show” and “All In with Chris Hayes.

There’s been a lot of discussion about what the future holds for CBS News ever since Skydance Media took over its parent company, Paramount Global.

Before the merger was finalized, Paramount Global decided to pay $16 million as a settlement for the lawsuit Trump filed against “60 Minutes” regarding an edited interview with his 2024 rival, Vice President Kamala Harris at that time. This lawsuit, deemed baseless by 1st Amendment experts, had negative effects on the news division’s morale and possibly resulted in Owens being dismissed in April.

Additionally, the new proprietors have pledged to the Federal Communications Commission that they intend to employ an ombudsman who will directly answer to Paramount’s newly appointed head, Jeff Shell.
