Is The Conjuring 4 a good end to the series? Here’s the first reactions

The first reactions are in for The Conjuring: Last Rites – but is it a worthy end to the series?

The new movie marks the fourth and concluding primary installment of the renowned horror series. Once again, Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson portray Lorraine and Ed Warren, delving into another investigation.

Based on initial responses shared through social media, it seems that the Conjuring films are wrapping up with positive reviews according to critic feedback.

In easier, more natural language, Courtney Howard wrote: “They saved the most terrifying and emotional chapter for the end with #TheConjuringLastRites / #TheConjuring. It’s a spine-tingling, unsettling, consistently nerve-wracking horror experience filled with intense moments and a heartfelt ode to family resilience. Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga continue to be the heart and soul.

Tessa Smith expressed that it was both fitting and exceptional, noting: “The fright sequences are fantastic, and the family interactions make it a heartfelt tale. Audiences will find themselves extremely pleased with this production. It’s filled with numerous callbacks and hidden gems. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Peter Gray advises fans of the franchise to find harmony with the movie, understanding that it may not bring anything entirely new, yet offering this appeal: “There’s a reassuring feeling in watching Wilson and Farmiga battle their weekly ‘demon.’ This film offers some genuine jumpscares, along with an air of conclusion.

The film, titled “Last Rites“, was also referred to as a “strong culmination” that “demonstrates exceptional acting, considered among the greatest of all time”, according to Perri Nemiroff from Collider.

The critic noted that while they prefer certain “Conjuring” films over others, one consistent aspect is undeniably clear: Wilson and Farmiga always pour their utmost effort into their roles.

From the very start, the warmth and tenacity exhibited by them, much like Ed & Lorraine, have proven irresistibly captivating, and I can assure you that this captivation persists until the end.

Yet, it hasn’t only received positive reviews. Critic Jonathan Sim has referred to the movie as “an average addition” or simply “not exceptional” within the well-established horror series.

Although it’s enjoyable to witness Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga’s last portrayal of the Warrens, it seems like a watered-down replica of a weary Conjuring formula. It lacks the same level of terror and can be surprisingly uneventful at times.

The Conjuring: Last Rites is released in cinemas on 5 September.
