Overwatch 2 scraps Hero Mastery mode to focus on Quick Play, Competitive, and Stadium

Players have until the end of Season 18 to complete the mode’s lifetime challenges.

In simple terms, Blizzard Entertainment is saying goodbye to the Hero Mastery mode in Overwatch 2. Additionally, any associated content for this feature will be discontinued during Season 19 this year.

Overwatch 2 scraps Hero Mastery mode

In the upcoming Seasons 18 and 19 of Overwatch 2, the Hero Mastery mode will no longer be available. As stated in a post by community manager Kaedi on the Blizzard Forums, this change is being made because the developers are choosing to concentrate their efforts on more popular modes such as Quick Play, Competitive, Stadium, and others.

In my enthusiasm for enhancing Quick Play, Competitive, Stadium, and other exciting new play options, I find myself drawn toward devoting more resources to these areas. Consequently, I’m afraid we’ll have to let go of some older game modes that haven’t received as much attention in the past. With this change in focus, we’ve decided that Hero Mastery courses will be retired, starting from Season 19 later this year, a decision that didn’t come lightly.

Overwatch 2 Hero Mastery mode update

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been thrilled to dive into Overwatch 2’s Hero Mastery mode since its debut in Season 6 way back in September 2023. Since then, it’s expanded significantly, now offering a whopping 17 courses! These aren’t just any courses; they’re tailored specifically for some of our favorite characters like D.Va, Reinhardt, Winston, Zarya, Ashe, Cassidy, Echo, Genji, Mei, Pharah, Sojourn, Soldier: 76, Tracer, Brigitte, Kiriko, Lucio, and Mercy.

To break it down, there are 4 courses designed for our tanky friends, 9 for damage dealers like myself, and 4 for the support heroes who keep us all in the fight. It’s been a fantastic journey so far, and I can’t wait to see what new challenges these courses will bring!

This game mode offers timed challenge tracks with varying complexities, including AI opponents and badges. The goal for players is to excel and enhance their rankings and star ratings to access more difficult levels. Unfortunately, as Overwatch 2 ceased adding new Hero Mastery courses starting from Season 18, the course featuring Ashe, reintroduced in January 2025, will be the final one added to the game mode.

Players who want to join the Hero Mastery mode have until the end of Season 18 to finish any of the mode’s lifetime challenges and strive for a spot on the Top 500 leaderboards. As per Kaedi’s post, players can win an epic loot box and a unique player title by accomplishing the Mastery I and Mastery III lifetime challenges at the beginning of Season 18.

Kaedi expressed her delight at witnessing numerous participants diving into the courses over the past couple of years, showcasing exceptional abilities with their preferred characters. She hinted at further opportunities to sustain this commitment during Season 18 and beyond. Thank you, and we look forward to meeting you in-game!
