Chris Columbus, who directed the first two Harry Potter films, hasn’t been shy about expressing his opinions on the upcoming HBO-adapted TV series set for 2027. Once more, he has expressed criticism towards the appearance of Hagrid in the show.
Multiple directors, such as Alfonso Cuarón, Mike Newell, and David Yates, have contributed to the Harry Potter film series. However, it is Chris Columbus who initially molded the cherished movies that set the franchise’s tone.
Despite not being directly involved with the HBO series, the original director feels that the world of Potter has no further stories for him to tell. However, he is open to a reboot provided it incorporates elements from the books that weren’t included in the films.
Filming for the upcoming Harry Potter TV series is currently in progress, boasting a fresh team of actors and filmmakers eager to weave enchanting tales on streaming platforms. What did Chris Columbus say about the Harry Potter show?
Nick Frost, known for his role in Shaun of the Dead, has been cast as Hagrid in the upcoming HBO series. Contrary to speculation, he’s not intending to mimic Robbie Coltrane’s portrayal of Hagrid from the film franchise. Instead, Frost aims to bring a unique blend of humor, mischief, fear, protection, and childlike qualities to his interpretation of the Hogwarts caretaker.
Following the emergence of pictures showing Nick Frost in a Hagrid costume for the HBO series, Chris Columbus shared his thoughts on these images during an interview with The Rest is Entertainment podcast, as reported by Variety.
The Home Alone director commented, “In these photos, Nick Frost appears to be wearing an identical outfit that we had designed for Hagrid. A part of me felt a bit puzzled: Why make these changes if everything is just going to remain the same?” This implies that the director expected new costumes and styles, but found that it would be similar to what has already been done.
Chris Columbus expressed that it’s complimentary to notice they are wearing a similar Hagrid costume, reminiscent of his Harry Potter films. Yet, upon seeing pictures of Nick Frost as Hagrid, he felt a sense of familiarity echoing something already experienced before.
The new HBO series might remind you of the original movies, with many familiar aspects. However, the forthcoming show, based on the books, will also introduce new elements not included in the movie versions. It is expected that the Harry Potter TV series on HBO will premiere around 2027.
