NPR’s “All Things Considered” is getting a new weekday voice.
Starting September 29, Scott Detrow will transition to hosting NPR’s afternoon radio show on a full-time basis, while continuing his current position as host of “Consider This,” NPR’s daily news podcast. The announcement was made by the public radio company.
Detrow expressed excitement about delivering news to listeners every weekday from now on. He also emphasized that it’s an opportune time for enhancing the entire public media system, encouraging collaboration and unity within the network like never before.
A week ago, the news emerged that Ari Shapiro was leaving the news magazine program he had hosted for almost ten years.
Over the last two years, Detrow’s voice has been a regular feature during weekend broadcasts of “All Things Considered.” He played a key role in covering significant breaking news stories such as the attempted assassination of President Trump in Pennsylvania, which earned him the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for Breaking News coverage.
He began working for NPR back in 2015. Starting out as a student at WFUV while attending Fordham University in the Bronx, he subsequently held positions as a statehouse reporter at WITF in Pennsylvania and at KQED. Throughout his entire professional journey, he has dedicated himself to public radio.
After joining the national nonprofit, he’s been instrumental in initiating projects like the “Reporter’s Notebook”, which offers an insider perspective on journalism creation, and more recently, he hosted live broadcasts regarding Pope Leo’s election. Additionally, for seven years, he co-hosted the “NPR Politics Podcast”, delving into the White House, Congress, and two presidential campaigns.
Since its debut in 1971, ‘All Things Considered’ has been a staple of National Public Radio. This popular program offers a blend of news updates, opinions, conversations, and investigative analyses every day.
Kicking off a fascinating loop, Detrow’s initial post-graduate role was dedicated to the regional adaptation of “All Things Considered” in central Pennsylvania.
He stated that he began his career as a host for an NPR affiliate station in the role of Air Traffic Control, and now has the opportunity to take on this role nationwide, which he feels proud about.
