But what exactly does this all mean??
In a somewhat distinct manner, even for a series set in a distant galaxy – like Star Wars – Visions tends to deviate from the norm. Animated productions generally enjoy greater creative liberty compared to live-action counterparts. A number of tasks and scenarios that are too impractical or costly to execute on set can be effortlessly realized within an animation studio. Notable instances of this can be found throughout the Star Wars universe, such as the immense Zilo Beast from The Clone Wars and the force-empowered karate chop disassembly of battle droids in Tartakovsky’s 2-D Clone Wars. These scenes would likely prove challenging, if not prohibitively expensive, in a live-action setting. Animation provides writers and producers with a platform to unleash their imagination without being confined by practicality or the need for ‘realism.’
The series “Visions” expands upon this idea in an imaginative manner. In its first two installments, it presents unusual spectacles such as a theatrical musical set on Tatooine, a stop-motion animated competition, and not to forget, a black-and-white Samurai-Jedi duel.
One interesting aspect that gives the series a new lease of life is that none of the stories are set within the standard canonical universe, which might present some challenges for dedicated fans who collect lore. For Star Wars, this expansive universe has typically been quite defined, making it intriguing to observe the creative process unfold. However, for creators with specific story ideas, finding their vision clashes with minor points in the established canon can feel restrictive. Given the size of the Star Wars universe, inconsistencies are inevitable, as seen both within current canon and the old Expanded Universe.
Experiencing freedom from limitations is incredibly inspiring when it comes to creativity. Star Wars boasts one of the most elaborate and captivating fictional universes. The lived-in quality of this world presents unparalleled possibilities. Allowing viewers to explore this world through a new perspective doesn’t diminish the existing narratives, but rather amplifies them and fuels further creative exploration, paving the way for even more compelling tales.
To honor these amazingly crafted mini-worlds, which were brought to life by a variety of international animation teams, it seems likely that the “back to where it all began” label implies that certain episodes from the new series might revisit tales previously presented in volumes one and two. Given that several studios are back on board, having already created Star Wars narratives, viewers may easily surmise which fictional realms could potentially resurface.
The poster you see features several familiar faces from popular titles. This isn’t an entirely new concept, as Disney’s animation studio has already explored it with their animated anthology series “What if…?” set within the Marvel Cinematic Universe, specifically in various alternate realities stemming from the main movie timeline. Each season of this show had some interconnected storylines. Could the upcoming series “Visions” follow a similar path?
Star Wars: Visions Volume 3 airs on October 29, exclusively on Disney+.
