Elizabeth Hurley shared that she found it surprising when Maya Jama recreated her famous Versace safety pin dress, which she wore at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards in November, as a tribute to her.
Maya’s daring gown featured openings and was secured by oversized golden safety pins, bearing a striking resemblance to the renowned Versace dress that catapulted Elizabeth to stardom.
At the 1994 premiere of Four Weddings and a Funeral, Elizabeth, age 60 at the time, who was previously unrecognized, drew international attention when she donned a striking £3,000 plunging dress alongside her then-boyfriend, Hugh Grant.
Approximately thirty years on, Maya returned the dress that catapulted her to fame to the red carpet once more, making sure she was noticeable among all the other attendees.
Upon learning about the connection, Liz, aged 60, shared with The Sun, ” Frankly, it seems strange to me, yet, in a way, it’s quite marvelous.
For quite some time now, individuals have often remarked to me, “The dress is celebrating its 20th anniversary, or even its 25th,” and I can’t help but find it hard to believe.

As I stood before the cameras, proudly showcasing the elegant gown that perfectly accentuated my tall and slender figure, I paired it with a set of sleek strappy stilettos, completing my captivating presentation.
Instead of accessorizing with jewelry, Maya chose to let her striking ensemble speak for itself. She styled her dark hair into gentle waves instead.
To perfectly complement her eye-catching appearance, she wore an impeccably applied makeup ensemble, featuring a cat-eye liner and a rosy lipstick shade.
In a Disney+ Vogue documentary aired last year, Liz opened up about the reasons behind her choice of a daring outfit for the event and discussed the massive response she received.
She expressed: “That night, I estimate I was captured in over 800 trillion photographs. The following day, our faces were plastered across every newspaper’s front page, leaving us bewildered and exclaiming, ‘What on earth is going on here?’
Initially, I was taken aback, thinking ‘What an unusual piece,’ but then realized, ‘Yes, that was quite bold for a dress, wasn’t it?’
Liz shared the story behind her wearing such an impressive designer early in her career: “Someone suggested I could reach out to a PR firm, who might be able to help me find a dress. On that very day, I called them, asking if they had anything available. Remarkably, they said they had just one dress!
I agreed to borrow it, provided I could access it. So, I took the subway to retrieve the dress, and it was given to me in a small white plastic bag.

The well-known actress and fashion model chose to travel by London’s Underground (Tube) to acquire her iconic, black Versace gown secured with big golden safety pins.
She said: ‘I’d never heard the name Versace before and it looked pretty precarious.
However, I recall bending over to touch my toes and reaching up, but nothing seemed to shift, so I swiftly descended the stairs at a run, and with that, the incident ended.
She notes, “The following day, we found ourselves as the headline news in all newspapers, and I couldn’t help but exclaim, ‘Goodness gracious, what on earth is happening?’
‘I hadn’t really realised how daring a dress it was.’
