Ryan Thomas, a renowned actor from Coronation Street, has spoken up in support of his choice to exempt his daughter Scarlett, who is a “nepo baby” (short for nepotism baby), from taking her GCSE exams.
Sixteen-year-old Scarlett, who made an appearance on BBC’s Waterloo Road in 2023, revealed in a TikTok post that she chose not to take the countrywide examinations.
Today, as I see others receiving their GCSE results, I can’t help but ponder if my grades could have been better. Regardless, this thought will always linger with me.
The video sparked a lot of debate online, with many people expressing their disapproval that the teenager chose to prioritize her fledgling acting career over taking the exams and going to school, which they found inappropriate.
He defiantly said: ‘Is it even anyone’s business or concern though?’

As a dedicated enthusiast of the arts, I find myself drawn to the vibrant world of show business, much like my renowned parents before me. My ardor for both acting and music propels me forward, eager to make a mark in this captivating realm.
In England, while many young individuals take GCSE exams, it’s important to note that these tests aren’t compulsory according to the Education Act of 1996. If they prefer, students have the option to go for other qualifications or even opt out of formal education at the age of 16.
Her initial television debut occurred on the series titled “Waterloo Road,” which helped solidify her uncle, Adam Thomas at age 37, as a well-known figure within many households.
Previously, Scarlett has defended herself against those who’ve criticized her for accepting acting roles while still quite young.
‘I hope no one doubts that a girl would seize the opportunities presented to her.’
When Scarlett made her first acting appearance, Scarlett’s mom, Tina (widely recognized for her role as Sarah Platt on Coronation Street and husband famed for playing Jason Grimshaw) posted on Instagram about feeling proud.
I am thrilled about @scarlettjthomas26! Her dedication to Waterloo Road is commendable, and I’ve truly enjoyed her performance as Izzy.

‘Wonderful to see her talent recognised by @tvtimesmagazine as she’s been nominated for an award.’
Scarlett has been creating a stir not just on BBC’s Waterloo Road, but also on social media. According to industry insiders, she has the potential to earn approximately £2 million before she turns 18.
She’s accumulated more than 165,000 followers on that platform, and an additional 138,000 fans on Instagram. Both accounts were started when she was 16 years old in October.
I frequently show up on my parents’ social media platforms, and interestingly, our family even maintains our very own account, making us quite the online presence within the Thomas household.
Among those mentioned is her renowned uncles – the actor Adam and reality TV personality Scott from Love Island – in addition to Ryan’s ex-TOWIE co-star, Lucy Mecklenburgh, who was his fiancée at one point.
