Karen Gillan lands next movie role in ’80s action remake

Karen Gillan has landed her next movie role, in the remake of an ’80s action classic.

The actor known for his roles in “Doctor Who,” “Jumanji,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” has been added to the cast of the remake of “Highlander.

The movie, similar to its 1986 predecessor, chronicles the journey of Connor MacLeod, a Scottish warrior, who learns about an enigmatic band of immortals engaged in continuous conflicts throughout history. And guess what? He’s part of this mysterious group as well.

Henry Cavill plays MacLeod in this version, while Gillan will play his mortal wife Heather.

In addition, we have Russell Crowe portraying swordsmith mentor Ramirez, and Dave Bautista playing the antagonist Kurgen, who was previously seen with Chris Pratt’s team in Guardians of the Galaxy. Moreover, Marisa Abela is rumored to be playing a significant role in this production.

Off-camera, Chad Stahelski (the director of John Wick) is overseeing the production, and Michael Finch, who wrote John Wick: Chapter 4, is crafting the screenplay.

Gillan reacted to the initial post by putting it up on her Instagram, playfully mentioning that she no longer felt the need to conceal her authentic Scottish accent.

She mentioned, “I won’t need my dialect coach for this role… I can’t wait to truly embody a Highlander character in the Highlander series!!!

Filming is set to take place in September in Scotland.

For approximately ten years, Stahelski has been connected with the project, and in the past, he shared with Digital Spy his reasons for its significance and his strategy for the reboot.

He expressed that he cherishes the original version, acknowledging its outdated aspects in some areas, yet he is enamored with its atmosphere and lore.

In essence, I propose we strive to preserve the atmosphere, lore, and emotional resonance from the initial film. Let’s avoid overcomplicating the narrative with excessive plots, instead focusing on expanding the realm of the immortals.

I’m more interested in the realm of the eternal than human activities. I aim to remain faithful to the source as authentically as possible while being a part of it.

A new version of Highlander hasn’t been given a specific release date yet, but it will be shown in cinemas. You can stream the original Highlander with a StudioCanal Presents subscription.

The latest issue from Digital Spy, titled “Oasis – Live in ’25,” is now available! You can purchase it at your local newsstands or online for only £8.99.
