David Mitchell, both a comedian and an actor, has argued that the term ‘mansplaining’ is merely a label given by some for what men refer to as simple conversations.
The 51-year-old pointed out that the term felt unjust, as men likewise engage in the same behavior towards one another.
The humorist commented to The Sunday Times: ‘I think the phrase “mansplaining” carries a certain bias, implying that it refers to men explaining matters in a dull manner to women.’
‘Because they do it to each other and they take turns, and that’s what men call a conversation.’
As I stand side by side with my long-term comedy companion, Robert Webb, aged 52, from the series Peep Show, I shared insights about male friendships. I described a common pattern we refer to as a ‘mutual explain’, where instead of openly discussing personal emotions, we often politely lecture each other.
As a devoted admirer, I can confirm that, during its inception in 2007, the partnership between Mitchell and his broadcaster spouse Victoria Coren was a subject we seldom discussed with Webb.

After hearing the news, the interview is conducted as Mitchell’s comedy series Outsiders has been postponed or put on hold for the past three years.
Between 2021 and 2023, the television series aired on Dave, placing comedians in hypothetical post-apocalyptic settings to assess their ability to survive such situations.
Mitchell portrayed his position as a somewhat confused, temperamental, and indecisive leader, yet informed producers that his schedule was too packed to film more seasons.
Mitchell said he was a bit disoriented, grumpy, and unsure as a leader, and claimed he didn’t have enough time to make more episodes.
UKTV officials at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival stated that the show is not coming back for now, but they might reconsider it in the future. Despite this, they appreciated their collaboration and his passion for the project.
We’d certainly appreciate hearing more suggestions involving David Mitchell, as he’s an exceptionally gifted individual.
In a new turn of events, while “Outsiders” no longer holds a place for Mitchell, he’s currently thriving in the BBC crime drama titled “Ludwig.” Here, he portrays a character who’s an avid puzzle solver, and takes on the persona of his missing police detective brother to uncover the mystery behind his disappearance.
The first season drew an impressive 9.5 million viewers, and a second series is now in production.
