Back in 2006, the whole country was abuzz with excitement as the World Cup approached. That’s when a sensational tabloid story dropped right into my hands.
For close to two decades now, I’ve been pondering the details surrounding an incident where Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole, known for his all-American image, found himself involved with a model whose photos appeared in a popular British tabloid’s third page (Page 3 girl). To add to the intrigue, Joe – who was in a committed relationship with Carly Zucker at the time – was seen sporting a large, noticeable black eye.
For several days, the intriguing story about Cole’s black eye dominated headlines. With everyone keeping quiet, curiosity grew about how this situation would unfold, particularly concerning Carly’s response and its potential impact on our World Cup prospects.
In the finale, everything was absolved when Cole scored a goal from a distance of 35 yards against Sweden. Afterward, he married personal trainer Carly and they have been blissfully married ever since, with three children together. However, we’ve always wondered what transpired that fateful night. Now, the mystery is finally revealed.
After nearly two decades, the woman once famously featured on Page 3, now 38-year-old Keeley Hazell, has spilled all the details about her life in her new autobiography titled “Everyone’s Seen My Bare Essentials.” An exclusive excerpt from this book is featured today in YOU magazine.
In my hands, I held a preview edition, transporting me back to the mid-2000s, a time when I was a gossip columnist for another publication. Needless to say, I knew of both Cole, at 24 years old then, and Keeley, just 19.
1) Typically, he socialized with his Chelsea teammates at parties, whereas Keeley often hung out with other Page 3 models.
2) Regularly, the man was found partying alongside his Chelsea mates, contrastingly, Keeley was frequently in the company of Page 3 ladies.
3) He tended to party with his fellow Chelsea players, and Keeley often found herself among the Page 3 girls.
4) The gentleman usually spent his time partying with his Chelsea teammates, while Keeley was accustomed to the company of Page 3 models.
5) Spending time partying was a common activity for him along with his Chelsea player friends, whereas Keeley had the company of fellow Page 3 girls most often.
It wasn’t until the cold night of January 2006 that Cole and Keeley’s paths appeared to intersect. It was generally believed that they had a romantic encounter, which ended abruptly when her partner walked in on them together and subsequently took matters into his own hands for revenge.

As a die-hard enthusiast, I was tasked with unraveling this mystery, and my editor essentially told me, “Stay put until you’ve unearthed the tale that will blow everyone away.
However, discovering the facts turned out to be an insurmountable task, as The Sun took great care in protecting Keeley, a frequent figure on its Page 3. It is presumed they transported her to a clandestine site, likely expecting she’d share her narrative with them – yet she never did so.
Cole, who is now 43 years old, similarly disappeared without responding to any knocks on the door. Simultaneously, Keeley’s ex-partner remained evasive about whether he had inflicted the black eye on Cole. However, after much anticipation, Keeley has finally shared the details – marking the start of a high-profile drama at Embassy, an exclusive club located in Mayfair. Typically filled with football players, that particular night Cole was accompanied by his team captain John Terry. Tragically, on that same night, both Keeley and her Page 3 colleagues were also present at the venue.
After securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory in the FA Cup against Huddersfield under the guidance of manager Jose Mourinho, I must admit that the team was granted a well-deserved two days off. Consequently, it comes as no shock to me that during those relaxed days, Keeley stumbled upon Cole in an intoxicated state, so drunk he could barely maintain his posture.
After noticing that the rest of our group had departed, I hopped into a cab with JC, who was quite tipsy and repeatedly said, “PartttttttyYYYYY.” I reached out to my friend Nic, whom we had been with earlier, to inquire about everyone’s whereabouts. However, her phone was turned off. I only had Nic’s number, and JC had lost his wallet. Feeling concerned for him, I offered to drop him home. He kept telling me he lived in “England,” which left me puzzled since I assumed he meant a specific location within the city. Determined not to leave my intoxicated friend alone on the streets, I persisted in asking for his exact address.
As a lifestyle expert, I found myself brimming with anticipation for the upcoming World Cup. The thought of leaving a key player in disarray amidst the bustling streets of Mayfair was simply unacceptable. Therefore, I took it upon myself to ensure their safety and wellbeing, guiding them through the event with unwavering dedication.
Since she couldn’t secure a bed for Cole at her friend’s boyfriend’s place, Keeley realized that her last resort was to bring him to her house located in a South London housing complex.

She describes placing him off the taxi onto her shoulder, giving him large amounts of water in the foyer, followed by guiding him to her room. Upon arrival, she removed his coat and shoes, then put him to rest in bed.
In the meantime, Keeley phoned her friend Patsy to inform her that Cole had shown up. Not long after, Patsy arrived. As Keeley remembers it, they both seemed a bit tipsy and quite thrilled, peeking through my bedroom door at JC, as if he were an intriguing exhibit at a zoo.
Later, my phone called me. It was Theo – my partner. “What do I do now?” I questioned Patsy. “How should I explain JC being in my room?” She suggested, “Just don’t mention it to him.
‘The key to Theo’s car was in my house while he was waiting for me to return so he could retrieve it. He had mentioned he was coming over. I attempted to come up with reasons for him to wait until the next morning, but I only managed to say that Patsy was staying overnight. His response was simply, “So?” Before I could gather my thoughts, Theo arrived at my house.’
I gave him a friendly greeting, attempting to maintain composure amidst the inner turmoil brought on by the genuine concern that JC might awaken soon, walk downstairs, and potentially disrupt my life in an unexpected way.
While Keeley and Patsy had made a pact to keep their guest a secret, Keeley found herself unable to hide the truth. Believing it was all in jest, Theo hastily ascended the stairs. However, when Keeley looked upstairs, she saw an unexpected sight: Theo on top of JC, raining blows upon JC’s head. JC attempted to push Theo away, but Theo continued to pin him down, throwing punch after punch.
According to her account, Keeley sternly warned Theo that if he continued carelessly, he would face severe consequences. As she remembers it, this wasn’t just a typical brawl at a casual bar; JC’s shirt had been torn from his body, and he was marked with bruises and blood.
As a lifestyle expert, let me share an experience: I found myself in an unexpected predicament, utterly clueless about finding a solution. Yet, remarkably, JC exhibited a display of courage that seemed almost otherworldly. He retaliated against Theo with a swift blow to the face. In response, Theo countered and JC gracefully sidestepped. They started to grapple within my very room, then in a flash, I never thought possible, JC dashed past Patsy and me. Before any of us could react, he was already out of sight.
It’s believed that, as the rumors suggested back then, Cole leaped through the living room window. Disheveled and injured, with just his pants on, Cole hurried to the closest minicab office, but the drivers at first did not recognize him.
In the following days, due to visible injuries, Cole ultimately participated in a reserved interview. He refuted any involvement with Keeley, yet admitted that he felt threatened for his safety after being attacked by another individual.
Months later he got engaged to Carly and wed a year on. Today, they live out of the spotlight.
It’s likely that Joe will be uncomfortable as his embarrassing night is being revisited. However, at least I’ve discovered the truth now. Thank you, Keeley!
