BBC star Michael Ball reveals his mother has died as devastated singer is flooded with support by fans

In a touching message shared with followers on Thursday, Michael Ball announced the passing of his beloved mother at the age of 91.

The 63-year-old singer and broadcaster, who was deeply saddened, expressed the news of Ruth Parry Ball’s passing through a shared vintage photograph of her.

In my own words, let me share that I exuded an aura of joy, sporting a broad grin, adorned in a chic, all-white ensemble, and topping it off with a spacious sunhat.

Her son Michael simply added: ‘Ruth Parry Ball 1934-2025 x.’ 

Michael received numerous heartfelt messages of sympathy from his supporters, expressing their condolences upon the death of Ruth.

One said: ‘Sorry for your loss, Michael. She must have been massively proud of you.’

A second responded, saying, ‘Oh, Michael! I’m deeply saddened by this news and grieve for your loss. My heartfelt sympathies go out to you and your entire family. In this difficult time, my thoughts and prayers are with you.’

‘Michael I’m sorry for your loss. My condolences to you and your family.’ said a third fan.

Michael, I’m deeply saddened by the news of your mother’s passing. May God grant you His peace, fortitude, and emotional recovery, as well as the same for your whole family. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Michael had a very strong bond with his mom and often shared updates about her well-being with his followers. He also surprised Ruth by taking her zip-lining on the occasion of her 90th birthday celebration last year.

Sharing a photo of Ruth all set for the event, Ball updated fans: “This weekend, we honored my beloved mother’s 90th birthday by traveling to Wales as a family.

So, what have we been doing? We went ahead and let a 90-year-old ride the world’s quickest zip line! Cheers!” or “What exciting adventure did we embark on? You won’t believe it – we took a thrilling ride on the fastest zip line in the world with a 90-year-old! Can you beat that?

In the previous year, it was officially revealed that Michael took over permanently as the host of Steve Wright’s Love Songs, following the unexpected passing of the long-term DJ.

On a Sunday between 11 am and 1 pm, the individual aged 63 years stepped into Steve’s usual spot, where the program was subsequently rebranded as “Love Songs with Michael Ball.

Michael hails from the town of Bromsgrove, located within the county of Worcestershire, with his mother, Ruth, being Welsh, and his father, Tony, being an English native.

He has two siblings – an older brother named Kevin and a younger sister called Katherine.

The BBC DJ lives with his partner Cathy McGowan, who is 20 years his senior.
