Eternals Director Reveals What’s ‘Dangerous’ About Making an MCU Movie

Chloe Zhao is gearing up for the premiere of her upcoming film, yet she’s been contemplating the process of creating “Eternals” in 2021 within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), and she has identified some potentially risky aspects about working there.

What did Chloe Zhao say about making Eternals?

During an interview with Vanity Fair, Zhao discussed her upcoming film titled Hamnet. She explained that her experience working on Eternals has been instrumental in preparing her for aspects such as creating a universe (world-building) and developing a movie set outside of reality, unlike her previous films which were all based on real-life events.

As a cinephile, diving into ‘Eternals’ was like stepping into an entirely new universe – something I hadn’t experienced before with my previous films that were grounded in reality. It served as a powerful lesson, teaching me the intricacies of world-building and pushing the boundaries of what’s feasible on screen. Through this journey, I learned valuable lessons about what works, and what doesn’t – all essential insights for my next project, ‘Hamnet’.

Zhao additionally noted that the vast budget of The Eternals, characterized as an almost limitless supply of funds and resources, might potentially pose risks by diluting the essence of what truly goes into crafting a film.

Zhao remarked, “The Eternals possessed an abundant wealth and resources, beyond comparison.” He continued, “We can compare this single street corner in Hamnet to the grandeur of Stratford… The Eternals were largely unbounded, which could potentially be hazardous. Because we have only this small street corner, everything takes on significance.

In 2021, The Eternals made its debut, but garnered mostly divided opinions from critics. Despite earning over $400 million at the box office, it was widely viewed as a disappointing effort by Marvel Studios. At present, there are no announced intentions for a follow-up to The Eternals, as stated by Kevin Feige.
