Breaking Down the Ending of Netflix’s Tense Political Thriller Hostage

Netflix’s suspenseful political series, titled Hostage, unfolds around the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Abigail Dalton (played by Suranne Jones). She finds herself in an extraordinary predicament: Her spouse, Alex (portrayed by Ashley Thomas), gets abducted while on a humanitarian mission to French Guiana with Médecins Sans Frontières. This abduction soon becomes a global challenge as Abigail and the French President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy) – who was in the UK for diplomatic talks – encounter a band of masked captors setting unrealistic conditions, backed by threats.

In this scenario, Abigail faces a tough decision: either quitting as Prime Minister to save her husband, or preserving her nation’s wellbeing. On the other hand, Vivienne is put in a difficult position where she is threatened not to intervene with Alex’s rescue. The kidnappers have a scandalous video featuring Vivienne and her stepson, Matheo, which they threaten to disclose if Vivienne assists Abigail.

The situation becomes more intense due to internal struggles. The United Kingdom is grappling with a dire health crisis at a national level, and Abigail is receiving backlash from citizens because she hasn’t fulfilled her pledge to prioritize healthcare in her policies. Additionally, her reductions in military funding have sparked discontent among the military personnel, causing unrest that is being taken advantage of by kidnappers to further their scheme.

In the thriller series Hostage, the main storylines come to a conclusion after the release of all five episodes on August 21st. Let me walk you through how each key plot point is resolved in this exciting show.

Are Alex and the doctors rescued?

In French Guiana, Alex and the doctors who were abducted are safely rescued by a military unit led by President Toussaint. Despite being threatened, Vivienne chooses to intervene, understanding that her political reputation and personal safety might be at stake. Regrettably, one of the doctors was fatally wounded during the rescue by one of the kidnappers, who was later neutralized by the French team.

Following the successful rescue operation, the survivors make their way back to the United Kingdom. It is worth noting that Vivienne and Abigail were able to negotiate a significant political accord: France will provide crucial medicines to the UK, empowering the government to handle the healthcare predicament, thereby lessening the flow of criticism towards Abigail’s governance.

What happens at 10 Downing Street?

Following their rescue, the captors release a compromising video of Vivienne and Matheo to the media. The footage depicts Matheo sharing a kiss with Vivienne while they’re in bed together. Upon learning about the leak and noticing reporters gathered outside his apartment, Matheo grabs a laptop left by his girlfriend, which holds confidential data. He then heads to 10 Downing Street, the official residence of the Prime Minister, where his stepmother is present. In Downing Street, Matheo discloses that he uncovered his girlfriend, Saskia Morgan, had been spying on him for several months prior to their relationship. Saskia, a former British Army corporal from the 3rd Battalion of the Highland Guards, was dismissed together with her battalion as a result of Abigail’s military budget cuts.

Previously, I discovered that Vivienne’s top aide was secretly working as an informant for John Shagan – a former soldier who later became entangled in this broader web of violence and disruption. It turns out Saskia has ties with Shagan. However, it seemed odd to me why someone would risk incriminating themselves by leaving behind a laptop filled with damaging evidence. But before our heroes could contemplate the mystery, the laptop unexpectedly detonated.

In the last episode, it’s disclosed that Vivienne Toussaint passed away due to an explosion. This tragedy led to Abigail stepping down as Prime Minister, and Dan Ogilvy, the Defense Secretary, assumed the role temporarily. He declared a national emergency, regaining control of the military, and instated a state of emergency in the country. With this change, Abigail met with her confidants in secret to investigate the source of all the chaos.

Who’s behind the chaos and kidnappings?

The main instigator of the kidnappings is Shagan, a one-time British soldier from the 3rd Battalion, where Saskia also served. Prior to Abigail’s tenure as Prime Minister, Shagan’s life suffered a significant setback. During Abigail’s time as a junior minister, she encountered a military predicament in Belize. As the most senior official present, she ordered the withdrawal of British troops, unintentionally leaving behind local civilians, among them Shagan’s pregnant fiancée. When she was tragically killed afterward, Shagan held Abigail accountable for her death. Overwhelmed by sorrow and anger, he carefully strategized attacks aimed at Abigail and her dear ones.

Meanwhile, it’s worth noting that Shagan wasn’t working alone. His former superior, General Joseph Livingston (Mark Lewis Jones), also held a personal stake in the situation. Disgruntled over Abigail’s military budget reductions, Livingston aimed to create instability within the country, convinced that such turmoil would underscore the errors of those cuts. He manipulated events, leveraging Shagan and other ex-soldiers who had been impacted by the cuts, as pawns in his political game against Abigail.

After uncovering Livingston’s role, Abigail gains access to the Ministry of Defense with the assistance of a trusted employee. During this clandestine meeting with Livingston, Ogilvy finds out that Livingston knows Shagan, thanks to Kofi, who is Abigail’s top advisor. Angered by the allegations, Livingston demands Abigail be expelled. However, in the heat of the moment, he accidentally reveals information about the incriminating laptop. Consequently, Ogilvy orders Livingston’s apprehension, and Abigail resumes her position as Prime Minister.

What happens to John Shagan?

Following Livingston’s arrest, Shagan, joined by some of his team members like Saskia, remained unapprehended. They tracked down Alex, Abigail’s husband, Sylvie, their teenage daughter, and Matheo in a secluded home. Saskia was instructed to take lethal action against Sylvie and Matheo should the situation require it, while Shagan kept Alex captive, compelling him to phone Abigail.

Without their knowledge, Matheo discreetly reaches out to the police. However, Saskia later finds out about this, but it’s already too late – an armed team is en route. During a struggle, Matheo manages to push Saskia back, and in the chaos, Sylvie takes hold of Saskia’s gun. Meanwhile, Abigail rushes to the room where Shagan has Alex captive. It is within this confrontation that Shagan’s reason for vengeance – the death of his pregnant fiancée – is finally disclosed to the others.

In this scene, Shagan, about to stab Abigail, hears the police approaching unexpectedly. Mistakenly, he blames Abigail for summoning them, unaware it was Matheo who alerted authorities. A fight ensues as Alex intervenes. Entering the room is Sylvie, their daughter, armed with a gun. Shagan purposely antagonizes Sylvie, attempting to sway her into shooting him due to his connection to her grandfather’s death – an event he orchestrated and Saskia executed. With emotions running high, Sylvie shoots Shagan, putting an end to his vengeful rampage. As the police burst in, they apprehend Sylvie.

How does Hostage end?

At the climax of the movie “Hostage”, Abigail addresses the public from Downing Street, calling for a nationwide election and pledging a platform centered on openness, integrity, and responsibility. The closing scene underscores Abigail’s fortitude; she has endured personal tragedy, political deception, and a national catastrophe, only to come out the other side more robust and committed to restoring not just her career but also her family life.
