Mastodon rocker Brent Hinds dead at 51 after horror Atlanta motorcycle crash

In an unfortunate turn of events, Brent Hinds, renowned vocalist and guitarist who garnered fame with the acclaimed heavy metal group Mastodon (winners of the Grammy), met his end in a motorcycle accident that occurred in Atlanta at age 51.

On Wednesday evening, at approximately 11:35 PM, as reported by Atlanta News First, Hinds, who had departed from Mastodon following a 25-year tenure in March 2025, tragically lost his life when his Harley-Davidson motorcycle collided with a BMW SUV.

According to a report from the Atlanta Police Department, the individual driving the SUV did not give way when turning, resulting in an incident where Hind was found unconscious at the scene. Tragically, medical personnel later confirmed Hind’s death.

According to the report, a man was riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle at the time of the accident. Sadly, medical professionals declared him dead at the scene.

Another driver, a woman driving a BMW SUV, stayed at the site of the accident. The Accident Investigation Unit of the Austin Police Department arrived at the scene to find out what happened.

Initial findings suggest that the man was heading west along Boulevard. A woman, driving an SUV model of BMW, didn’t give way while making a left turn and crashed into the motorcyclist, who happened to be a man riding a Harley-Davidson. The investigation is still ongoing at present.

In a deeply moving post on Instagram, the band expressed their unimaginable sorrow and despair upon learning that Brent Hinds had tragically lost his life in an accident the previous night.

We’re deeply grieving, taken aback, and finding it hard to accept the passing of a prolific artist who was integral to our successes, achievements, and the production of music that resonated with countless others.

We deeply sympathize with Brent’s loved ones, acquaintances, and supporters. We kindly request that everyone honors their privacy as they navigate through this challenging period. Farewell, Brent.

The rock band Mastodon experienced significant success with three of their albums reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard 200, and two of them even claimed the top spot on the Rock Album chart. These successful releases include “Emperor of Sand” in 2017 and “Once More ’round the Sun” in 2014.

In 2000, I was fortunate to join forces with my bandmates, Troy Sanders on the bass, Bill Kelliher on the guitar, and Brann Dailor behind the drums, as we embarked on a remarkable journey together known as Mastodon’s co-foundation.

On Blood Mountain, Mastodon’s third studio album released in 2006, marked their initial entry into the Top 40 charts, reaching as high as number 32 on the Billboard 200.

In March 2025, it was Hinds who chose to exit the group. The specific cause behind this separation remains unknown. The band announced that their departure was a mutual agreement, but Hinds’ Instagram posts hinted at some tension within the group.

At that time, the band expressed their deep pride and heartfelt gratitude for the music and history they’d experienced together. They wished him only the best in terms of success and happiness in his upcoming ventures.

In 2017, Mastodon received a total of six Grammy Award nominations and won one for their exceptional metal performance on the track “Sultan’s Curse” from their album “Emperor of Sand”.

In simpler terms, The Hunter, Mastodon’s 2011 album, was praised by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the year’s best. They noted that the band had refined their heavy, chaotic sound into a more focused, rhythmic style, but still retained their unique blend of intricate and strange elements without holding back at all.

Earlier this year, Hinds had planned to travel through Europe with the band Fiend Without a Face, a group he started while he was part of Mastodon.
