Jamie Jewitt, a former contestant on Love Island, has shared insights into his experiences of fatherhood, confessing that he didn’t initially experience an instant outpouring of affection for his newborns upon their birth.
In a straightforward manner, A 34-year-old man, who found his wife Camilla Thurlow on the popular ITV2 dating show back in 2017, expressed his intention to share his personal experiences, aiming to provide comfort and support to other fathers going through similar feelings.
In 2021, a pair got married and they have three kids – 4-year-old Nell, 2-year-old Nora, and nine-month-old Frankie. However, Jamie shared that his experience becoming a dad didn’t turn out as he had imagined.
‘The author discusses the experience of becoming a father, often referred to as a defining or significant moment. He uses terms like “the big one” and “Hollywood moment,” suggesting it’s typically portrayed in media as an overwhelmingly emotional event where fathers instantly feel a massive surge of love upon their baby’s arrival. However, the author questions what happens when this isn’t the case.’
The celebrity who used to be a model reminisced about the birth of his first child, Nell, in October 2020, sharing that his immediate response was feeling detached.
In a room with a strong scent of bleach and adrenaline, you find yourself watching the person you cherish dearly experience something beyond your understanding. Then, a moment arrives when someone places a tiny, crumpled, shrieking being into your arms, and your initial thought is: “Ah, this must be it then?

Jamie acknowledged that he found it challenging to form a strong connection with his kids initially, stating that the idea that new fathers should immediately feel a deep love might actually cause harm.
I’ve been utterly flabbergasted to find myself ensnared in a deception, a deceit that’s not just misleading but potentially harmful – a cruel twist of well-meaning intentions. You see, a woman, in the span of nine long months, becomes an incubator for her unborn child. Her body undergoes a miraculous transformation, her hormones reworking her very essence, reshaping her brain, and priming her – both emotionally and physically – for the incredible journey of motherhood.
A father may sometimes struggle to accept the idea of having a baby, while the assumption is that both parents should have identical experiences during their first meeting with the child. However, it’s important to note that this isn’t always the case.
Originally from Essex, the celebrity who made it to the finals of Love Island with Camilla, revealed later that he was not the only one experiencing these feelings.
As a devotee, I’d rephrase it this way: “Many men, in quiet moments, have confessed something to themselves that often feels like a secret burden: ‘Initially, I didn’t feel anything… at least not right away.’ They whisper these words with a hint of regret, as if they are confessing a personal shortcoming or lack of emotion.
‘Although we might express enthusiasm by nodding, smiling, using phrases like “Oh yeah, it was enchanting,” posting edited photos on Instagram accompanied by a heart emoji, there’s often an underlying question: why isn’t the emotional response as expected?’
It can be said that Jamie contends that mothers experience physiological transformations during pregnancy and childbirth which readies them for attachment, whereas fathers typically undergo hormonal adjustments at a later stage, primarily through active engagement in daily caregiving tasks.
‘That’s the secret no one tells you: love predominantly grows in the doing,’ he wrote.

‘It’s in the late-night bottle feedings, the burp that feels like a gentle milk explosion against your chest, the instance when your baby turns towards you and offers their first genuine smile. This isn’t an instant love. It’s a love that grows through hard work, sacrifice, and being there.’
As a doting dad of three, I can confess that my life-changing moment didn’t unfold in the delivery room, but rather during the ensuing weeks as I tirelessly visited my precious little girl despite battling self-doubt.
The event didn’t occur on the day my child was born, but rather transpired following several weeks of pushing through self-doubt and internal struggles.
One day, I suddenly recognized that time had quietly caught up with me… Over time, without even noticing, I gradually stepped into the limelight and took on a prominent role in my daughter’s world.
As a self-proclaimed lifestyle aficionado, allow me to share Jamie’s profound sentiments regarding fatherhood. In his own words, “My life’s purpose is irrevocably intertwined with this journey of becoming the best dad possible. It’s not an obligation I feel bound by, but rather a passion that burns within me-a love for my children that propels me forward every day.
When I see any of my children with sleepy eyes and a heart brimming with love, it becomes clear to me that I’d go to great lengths for them.
As I look back on my own experiences, I can’t help but feel a sense of empathy for all the new fathers out there. My heartfelt hope is that by sharing my personal journey, I might offer some comfort and relief to those who are navigating the unique challenges of parenthood for the first time. Here’s to supporting one another as we continue to grow and learn together in this exciting new chapter of life.
For new dads who might not be feeling the full emotional connection yet, remember it’s okay. It doesn’t mean there’s something amiss with you or that you are emotionally unresponsive. Rather, it signifies that the process of bonding is still underway – you haven’t reached your complete transition into fatherhood just yet.
Take your time, consistently appear, and continue to do so. This is essential because once a strong bond forms, it won’t be due to external influences. Instead, it will stem from the efforts you’ve put in to create it.
Living in a rural setting now are Jamie and Camilla, along with their trio of young kids. Not too long ago, it was shared that their eldest child, Nora, was identified with autism.

Autism is a developmental condition that affects the brain, often causing challenges in social interaction and communication. This can include struggles with recognizing social signals and emotions.
As Jamie went on, he expressed that when you come to understand that you’ve deservedly claimed your place under the spotlight and become a shining example for your child, it will bring a reward greater than an Oscar, a sense of fulfillment beyond any other accomplishment, and emotions more profound than you might expect.
Previously, Jamie’s spouse, Camilla, has been candid about their daughter Nora’s delayed milestones in walking and speaking. More recently, Camilla disclosed that Nora is on the autism spectrum.
To celebrate her third birthday, Camilla delightfully shared a collection of heartwarming photos featuring herself, Jamie, and Nora. In these photos, they are seen smiling together, and Camilla expressed her affection for Nora’s peaceful nature.
In a single picture, they three were dressed in shirts emblazoned with the phrase ‘Love Needs No Words’. In the description that accompanied it, Camilla mentioned that Nora doesn’t use words.
On the night before Nora turned three, there are many things to express, and she is doing so in her unique way. Even though she might not verbally communicate yet, I hope you can understand the message she’s conveying here clearly.
You comprehend her just as we do – from the perspective of eyes that narrate the entire tale of a tender spirit and a courageous, loving heart.”
In this version, I have used more formal language to convey the same meaning while still keeping it easy to read. Additionally, I replaced the emoji with a more descriptive term (“loving heart”) for clarity.
I appreciate your thoughtful interaction with her, filled with comprehension, motivation, and above all, happiness (grinning face emoji). Her affection, and by extension ours, doesn’t require spoken words. Instead, it thrives on our presence.
In March, Camilla announced that Nora had been diagnosed with autism in a heartfelt Instagram post.

She commended her daughter for her resilience and expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying they feel incredibly blessed to be her parents, as she acknowledged the assistance of her dear ones.
Camilla and Jamie are among Love Island’s most triumphant couples, having found each other on the ITV2 dating program and finishing as second place behind Amber Davies and Kem Cetinay.
In May 2020, the pair declared they were having their initial child, and in October of the same year, they brought baby girl Nell into their family.
In February 2021, Jamie expressed his proposal by dressing Nell up in a charming onesie that read “Mummy, will you marry my daddy?
In September 2021, the pair got married at Gosfield Hall in Essex, and their friend Marcel Somerville from the entertainment industry was present for the ceremony.
In December of that year, they revealed they were having their second child together, and little Nora arrived in May 2022.
On May 8, 2024, Camilla and Jamie joyously expanded their family by welcoming their third child, a baby boy named Brodie. They shared this wonderful news on their Instagram account.
