On Tuesday, Ernesto Barajas, the frontman of the regional Mexican group Enigma Norteño, was fatally shot in the municipality of Zapopan, Jalisco, Mexico, as reported by ABC 7.
According to reports from ABC 7 and authorities, it’s stated that the singer was fatally shot by unknown assailants on a motorcycle. The Jalisco State Prosecutor’s Office has initiated an inquiry into this homicide.
A band hailing from Sinaloa is recognized for their “viral ballads about drugs,” a unique musical approach often associated with the glamorization of criminal organizations. Enigma Norteño frequently composes songs honoring figures within the Jalisco Nueva Generacion and Sinaloa cartels. This genre has been prohibited in about a third of Mexican states.
Three months ago, the death of Barajas occurred following the discovery of five deceased members from the northern Mexico-based band Fugitivo in the city of Reynosa.

World & Nation
Mexican officials are accusing the Gulf cartel of being responsible for the murders of five musicians from the band El Fugitivo in the border state of Tamaulipas.
In July, the Judiciary Council of the State of Jalisco decided to dismiss the criminal charges against the Mexican band Los Alegres Del Barranco, who were under scrutiny following a performance where they showed an image of a leader from the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación.
In April, the Mexican administration declared a music competition, aimed at motivating Mexican musicians to compose songs that shun the glamorization of a violent culture. This contest, as reported by Billboard, is designed to inspire artists to focus on themes such as love, heartache, and peace instead.
I believe it’s crucial to emphasize that while the contest won’t instantly resolve our current issue, we’re committed to addressing the root causes, which is a significant part of our national security agenda. However, recognizing the immense talent and passion of Mexican and Mexican-American youth in music, we decided it was essential to establish platforms fostering creativity through culture.
Officials from the state of Jalisco were unable to provide a comment before the deadline for this article.
