James Gunn Explains Why He Directed Certain Episodes Of Peacemaker Season 2 And Not Others

Prior to taking on the role of co-running DC Studios with Peter Safran, James Gunn had already established a niche for himself in the realm of DC Comics media. Following his appointment as writer and director for 2021’s “The Suicide Squad,” he subsequently produced the spinoff series “Peacemaker” in 2022. The former is set to debut on the 2025 TV schedule, although unlike before, Gunn did not direct every episode of Season 2. Now, he has revealed his reasons for directing specific episodes of this forthcoming entry, while not others, from the lineup of upcoming DC shows.

During a Q&A session at the Peacemaker Season 2 press tour that TopMob attended, our reporter Hannah Saulic questioned James Gunn about how he chose which episodes to direct in this season and if it was more challenging than expected for him to separate them. Gunn, who is confirmed to have directed the first, sixth, and eighth episodes of this new season (available on HBO Max), began by explaining:

Indeed, it was quite straightforward with Episodes 2 and 3. For a long time, I’ve admired Greg Mottola, who has been an inspiration to me since I saw his movie ‘The Daytrippers’. When I saw it as a younger person, I thought it was fantastic. That’s why I consider him the ultimate collaborator. He really grasped the essence of our show, both its dramatic and comedic aspects. He also had a knack for not overdoing the visual style of filming the show, which is not always an easy feat.

In the second and third episodes of Season 2 for the series “Peacemaker,” Greg Mottola was the director, whereas Peter Sollett took charge in Episode 4. The directors for Episodes 5 and 7 are still unannounced at this time. James Gunn, the show’s creator, felt comfortable delegating that portion of directing duties to Mottola, who is also known for “Superbad” and “Keeping Up with the Joneses.” It appears that Gunn had an enjoyable experience collaborating with Mottola, given how well he grasped the complex aspects of the show.

Given his responsibilities as the chief creative officer at DC Studios, James Gunn simply couldn’t oversee all episodes of Peacemaker Season 2 on his own. Therefore, he had to prioritize and choose the ones that required his unique input personally. As he put it:

Given his commitment to DC Studios, James Gunn found himself unable to supervise all episodes of Peacemaker Season 2. Consequently, he needed to select those needing his personal touch.

Sometimes, balancing multiple responsibilities can be challenging. Originally, I intended to direct every episode, but subsequently got offered a role as the studio’s head, leaving me with limited time. As a result, I chose to focus on the three most complex episodes, which turned out to be quite demanding. Among those, episodes six and eight are my personal favorites from the season.

During his work at DC Studios, it’s worth noting that Gunn was also handling the direction of Superman simultaneously while Peacemaker Season 2 was being filmed. This double duty made it more challenging for him to be as involved compared to Season 1, but deciding to direct episodes six and eight wasn’t a difficult choice for Gunn, as he himself explained.

In a nutshell,

But number 6, there’s an extremely extended, intense scene that’s particularly challenging. And number 8 is quite extensive. Consequently, I had to select the ones that appealed to me the most and seemed to require my attention the most.

James Gunn continues to be the writer for every episode of Peacemaker Season 2, ensuring his distinctive style remains consistent throughout. Besides John Cena returning as Christopher Smith, Danielle Brooks, Freddie Stroma, Jennifer Holland, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick will reprise their main roles in this season. Joining them are Frank Grillo, Sol Rodríguez, Tim Meadows, Michael Rooker, and others.
