Following the adult-oriented sequel to Superman 2025, which was previously known as Superman, James Gunn and DC Studios gave a heads up that his upcoming Superman spinoff wouldn’t be suitable for young viewers. The fresh start of the DC Universe (DCU) made its big screen debut only recently with the David Corenswet-starring Man of Steel reboot. This new version of Superman offers a vibrant, colorful, and comics-inspired perspective on the DC Comics universe. Notably, this interconnected TV and film franchise will showcase diverse tones, genres, and creative visions across different projects.
The diverse directive from Gunn and the DC Studios team indicates that not all projects within the DC Universe will cater to every viewer. Some may be more suitable for mature audiences, such as next year’s R-rated Clayface film, while others like the upcoming Supergirl series might have a wider audience appeal. It appears that Gunn’s initial project post-Superman falls under the category of mature content.
During a conversation with Interview Magazine, the head of DC Studios along with the director of Superman revealed that the upcoming Superman sequel is explicitly intended for mature audiences.
As a passionate cinephile, I feel compelled to clarify that my upcoming DC Universe project, “Peacemaker” Season 2, doesn’t align thematically with my freshly unveiled Superman reboot. I believe it’s essential for the viewers to understand this distinction.
As a fellow cinephile, let me share some insights about an upcoming Superman sequel. While it does continue the story of our beloved Man of Steel, please be aware that it’s not suitable for young audiences. It delves deeper into complex themes and may contain intense scenes that might not resonate well with children. Enjoy the movie responsibly!
He elaborated on a specific explicit scene within the fresh season, which underscores the contrast between the ventures, aptly, strolling through a “‘lively gathering in the debut episode’“, aimed at signaling to viewers, “This is an adventurous journey:”
This paraphrased version retains the original meaning but uses more natural and less informal language. It may be considered suitable for a wider range of audiences.
Absolutely, there are some suggestive moments. Let me explain, we aimed to create a raw and authentic experience. [Laughs] I don’t have any qualms about the use of adult content. The period of intense controversy surrounding it seems to be over, as far as I can tell. However, the explicit scene in the first episode serves to warn viewers that they are in for a wild ride throughout the entire season and this is the level of unconventionality they should expect.
Similar to its predecessor, the upcoming Season 2 of “Peacemaker” is rated R and will be available on HBO Max. While it shares connections with “Superman,” this streaming series promises a more mature narrative than James Gunn’s popular superhero movie.
In the upcoming second season of “Peacemaker,” the story will once more revolve around John Cena’s character, Christopher Smith, a troubled peace advocate who takes on the role of a vigilante. This time, he is approached by a secretive government agency called Argus. Alongside Cena, Jennifer Holland, Danielle Brooks, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick will also be joining the cast for this season. The much-anticipated second season of the popular DC series will premiere on HBO Max starting on August 21st.
Peacemaker and Superman Represent the DCU At Work

Ever since its initial introduction, the ambition behind the DCU (DC Universe) has been to assemble diverse creative and stylistic perspectives into a more extensive, interwoven tapestry of comic book narratives.
Unlike the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the Marvel Studios’ on-screen universe can be seen as a harmonious tapestry where different tones, though similar in color, are skillfully combined. On the other hand, the DC Universe (DCU) has been described as a mosaic, with each project offering a unique and distinct feel compared to others.
In an interview (The Wrap), Sean Gunn, who played Maxwell Lord and is James Gunn’s brother, expressed this approach as embodying the comic book mindset of “‘having the liberty to express one’s individual perspective in storytelling,’” while still maintaining a consistent universe.
What truly captivates me is envisioning numerous tales set within a shared universe, yet each with the liberty to reflect the distinct imagination of its respective author. Consequently, multiple narratives coexist in this world, but they are crafted by diverse storytellers and may belong to various genres.
This indicates that Superman, Peacemaker, and Lanterns can coexist within the same universe known as the DCU. Each character has unique tones, appearances, and styles, but they all belong to the same world.
Gunn’s fresh approach to DC’s strategy is likely to produce various television and movie ventures, ensuring that different audience segments may not relish every piece, but this diversity could ensure the DC Universe maintains its unique identity for an extended period.
