DC Confirms 2026’s Supergirl Movie Will Bring Back 1 ‘Superman’ Character In Major Role

In an exciting announcement, James Gunn has confirmed that a significant character from Superman will make a comeback in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and is expected to play a crucial role. The original Superman series set the stage for the DCU with panache, introducing viewers to numerous key characters as part of this newly developed, interconnected universe.

Gunn, although not directly involved in the direction or scriptwriting of Supergirl, still plays a significant role as a producer and creative force within the DCU. Recently, he revealed that Krypto will have a key part in the upcoming Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow series. The presence of Krypto in Supergirl was hinted at towards the end of Superman, leading fans to speculate about his involvement. Given the events surrounding him in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic, there has been much curiosity about how central his role would be.

In an interview on the podcast Armchair Expert with Dax Shepard (available on YouTube), Gunn discussed some aspects of Krypto’s origin, hinting at further revelations about his character in upcoming DC Universe projects.

To clarify, Gunn affirmed that Krypto hails from the planet Krypton. However, when inquired about whether he arrived on Earth in the same spacecraft as Superman, Gunn responded, “Not quite in the same manner.

In the following scenario, Gunn was questioned about whether DCU executives, including himself, have concerns regarding Krypto’s origins and age. Gunn admitted that they do ponder over these issues, but choose not to delve into them within the context of Superman. He further added that Krypto plays a significant role in Supergirl, and fans can expect to learn more about him in the future.

In this film, there are certain aspects that remain unexplained, but rest assured, Krypto plays a significant role in the upcoming movie, “Supergirl”. We will delve deeper into his storyline in that film.

Later, Gunn elaborated a bit on the process of creating Krypto. He shared an interesting fact that the director utilized his personal dog in bringing the character to life.

“It’s my dog, that character. He’s actually physically my dog.”

When Dax playfully teased Gunn about whether his dog was trained to act and if it had its own Screen Actors Guild membership card, Gunn humorously retorted, stating, “‘Not Jesus Christ, no,'” followed by laughter.

Dax jokingly asked Gunn if his pet learned acting skills and earned a SAG card (signifying membership in the actors’ union). In response, Gunn replied with a chuckle, saying, “‘Nope, not even Jesus Christ,'” implying that the dog didn’t have such an achievement.

Gunn then went into a bit of detail about how he used his dog to bring Krypto to life:

Initially, my dog was quite mischievous, but we decided to give him a unique look by turning him white. Essentially, he’s now my white-colored dog. We took his picture and then transformed him into a canine resembling Krypto.

From that chat, what stood out the most was Gunn clarifying that Krypto will have a significant part in the storyline of Supergirl. Krypto has always been pivotal to the narrative of Superman, making multiple appearances throughout the movie.

The upcoming movie titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” is scheduled for a release on June 26, 2026. This film has been penned by Ana Nogueira and will be directed by Craig Gillespie, who’s known for his work on films like “I, Tonya” and “Cruella”. A sneak peek at the movie “Supergirl” was unveiled just a week following the release of “Superman”.

Krypto’s Character Arc in the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Comic

The upcoming “Supergirl” movie is set to be based on the “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” comic series. While Krypto does feature in this narrative, his role is not central or dominant.

In the early stages of the comic book series, Krypto, Superman’s canine companion, sustains an injury at the hands of Krem, the primary adversary in the “Woman of Tomorrow” narrative. More precisely, he is struck by a poisoned arrow, rendering him temporarily incapacitated.

After that, Krypto doesn’t show up again until the final scene of the comic, where he is healed.

Based on Gunn’s statement that Krypto is crucial for the Supergirl film, it looks like they might adjust the storyline to feature Krypto more prominently in the adaption.

The character Krem might still choose to take aim at him, yet we can expect the character to remain visible throughout the movie. We’ll get a glimpse into his recovery journey as well.
